As you read these notes with your early release Opus 1.10, your palms begin to sweat, anxious to get this wonderful new version working. Even as you read, full documentation with lots of detail is in preparation to allow you to take the fullest advantage of all the wonderful new features. If you are an Opus 1.0x sysop, you just can't wait to see this baby run. We have prepared this set of quick start notes to allow you to convert your existing system without too much trouble. When full documentation is released, it will contain the necessary information to get the most out of your new Opus 1.10 system. In the meantime, check the MEADOW echomail conference for late breaking details. Why did we do it? -- tell you one date, and then release early? Well, historically, the release of any version of Opus has bogged down the phone systems of many areas. There are more Opus sysops than ever before, and we felt like a little surprise would allow distribution to go a little smoother. Besides, the code has been pretty stable for weeks. Full documentation will be available very soon. We hope this preliminary installation manual will get you started while we finish preparation of the remaining docs. OPUS 1.10 INSTALLATION Page 2 Pre-release Notes 2 Distribution Files The distribution files are: OEXE_110.ZIP Opus main executable program OMAK_110.ZIP Opus installation/conversion kit OMAN_110.ZIP Opus manager program OPIE_110.ZIP Opus parameter file manipulator program OREAD110.ZIP Opus preliminary documentation 3 Quick Start Steps Follow these steps for converting an existing Opus 1.0x system or installation of a new Opus 1.10. If you run a front end mailer, like Binkleyterm, you can convert and leave all your batch files exactly as they are. Isn't that nice? . BACKUP YOUR SYSTEM!!!!! If you lose files because of you did not backup, guess whose fault it is? . If you are doing a first time Opus installation, go to table 2-1. . If you are converting an Opus 1.0x system, go to table 2-2. There are ZIP files inside these main ZIPs. º º DO NOT UNPACK THEM. º º º º3. Type STARTUP ADVANCED. º º º º4. We recommend that you take the defaults on all º º answers, except the modem port and modem selection º º questions for your first time installation. When º º the procedure runs, you will recieve numerous º º warnings about access level. Ignore these for now. º º They are Wynn Wagner's social statements about what º º access levels should be allowed to various options º º in the CBCS. º º º º5. Go to section 4 to install OMAN and be sure to read º º the notes in sections 5 and 6. º ÈÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍͼ OPUS 1.10 INSTALLATION Page 4 Pre-release Notes ÉÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍ» º TABLE 2-2 Conversion of Opus 1.0x to Opus 1.10 º ÇÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄĶ º1. We º º guarantee that you will not make through conversion º º the first time successfully. º º º º This procedure will read your existing configuration º º and convert it. You may have been running your Opus º º 1.0x system with incorrectly defined areas or º º missing directories in some of your areas. Well, º º now its time to pay the Piper. The control file º º compiler, SALT, will force you to get your act º º together. º º º º SALT, invoked by the CONVERT program, rigorously º º checks all paths and area definitions. It usually º º takes at least fifteen runs of SALT to correct all º º inconsistencies and problems. No one has been able º º to run it the first time without error. You will be º º amazed at how many errors you have in your own Opus º º 1.0x system configuration. Typical problems are º º mismatched directories and filenames. Another º º common problem is to have message area definitions º º that do not match those in your ECHO.CTL file. º º º º If you fail the first time (and you will), look at º º the .CTL file in your Opus root directory. Look for º º warning lines in it and correct the problems º º indicated. Then rerun the CONVERT program. GOOD º º LUCK! º ÈÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍͼ OPUS 1.10 INSTALLATION Page 5 Pre-release Notes 4 Installation of Oman Unpack OMAN_110.ZIP into your Opus root directory. Now all you have to do is edit the config file to match your setup. The are only few edits necessary. For now, leave all options commented except these as shown: OPUSROOT C:\OPUS VIDEO DOS PARM C:\OPUS\BBS You can experiment with the options for now, but these should work in most systems. You can fire up OMAN by just typing OMAN from the Opus root directory. If you formerly used Tom Kashuba's excellent program OOPS, then you will see an old friend in OMAN. Follow the menus and helps to move around. By the time the full documentation is released you will probably have fumbled around enough to be ready for the extra goodies that the documentation will unfold for you. 5 Lift off! Now you are ready for the moment of truth. If you had a working Opus 1.0x system, your new Opus should run almost identical to your old setup. You will probably notice that it is a good bit snappier and responsive and the matrix transfers are an order of magnitude faster. That's the affects of lots of assembler code and two and a half years of improvements. Be sure to at least have a peek at section 6. There are some little changes that you need to know about to tune your new Opus 1.10 system. 6 Gotchas or those little changes for the better Some things have changed in Opus. You need to note these to be sure you are completely functional. You may need to move some text screens around to preserve the look and feel of your unique CBCS which you achieved with Opus 1.0x. . Chat and Yell A special Chat program is now required in order for the Yell and Chat function in Opus to work. Load it just after the point that you load your fossil. If you run Desqview and load your fossil outside of Desqview, then OPUS 1.10 INSTALLATION Page 6 Pre-release Notes load the chat module outside, also. This program is very small and takes about 2.2k of memory. Its rather crude at this point and does not have a logging function. A much more polished version is under construction. Operation instructions are simple. Press `C' to chat and `Alt-Q' to exit Chat. You will notice that the yell bell rings a LONG time. That is on the hit list of things to fix at this time. . Fossils Opus requires a level 5 fossil communications driver. Fossils known to work very well are X00 v1.20c and later, and OPUSCOM 5.3x. Warning! As of the writing of this document, BNU has not worked very well with OPUS 1.10. The author is aware of the problems and should have a version out that works well with OPUS 1.10. If you have been using a front end mailer and are used to getting good throughput rates, you may be surprised to learn that Opus 1.10 is not a slouch in this area. Most naked Opus 1.10 installations are achieving 1650 cps throughputs with the U.S. Robotics 14.4 HST modem. . Bulletin Opus 1.10 drops direct support for an explicit bulletin file. However you can achieve the same results that you are used to with Opus 1.0x bulletin file by the use of embedded codes. At the top of your WELCOME.?BS files add these codes: ^OFc:\opus\misc\bulletin In your MAIN menu definition, you can call the bulletin with this definition in your BBS110.CTL file: MAIN MENU _SHOW Disgrace"Bulletin" = c:\opus\misc\Bulletin END Menu OPUS 1.10 INSTALLATION Page 7 Pre-release Notes .
