VENTURA PUBLISHER FOR WINDOWS COMMON QUESTIONS Compiled by Karl Anthony/VSI Tech Support INSTALLATION Q: Installed VPWin - will not load first time A1: If "No Default Printer" error message is presented, go to the Windows Control Panel, select Printers and double-click on the desired printer in the Installed Printers list. The default printer will then appear in the second box labeled Default Printer. A2: If "Bad or Missing Netbios" message appears, have your network administrator copy NETBIOS.EXE file from Novell Netware distribution disks onto your boot disk. Include the Netbios command after NET3, XMSNET3, NET4, XMSNET4 (whichever applies to your system) in your AUTOEXEC.BAT or batch file that starts the network. The Netbios command is required if your computer is attached to a network whether or not you are actually using the network. A3: If "Divide by Zero" or UAE error occurs when attempting to run the first time and there are example files installed from a previous version of Gem, rename or delete DEFAULT.STY. If still will not load, see the next question on UAE with third-party screen drivers. Q: UAE (Unrecoverable Application Error) for no apparent reason A: If you are receiving UAE message when selecting Text Menu or choosing Alignment of Text from Paragraph Menu, usually a third- party (non-Microsoft) screen driver for Windows has been installed. Contact manufacturer for screen drivers that will operate with Ventura for Windows. Q: Loading large document, receive error message A: Increase the memory allocation in the Help/About VPWin 3.0 dialog box. When dialog box is open press F1(Help) to receive information on how to increment these numbers. VPWIN must be restarted to reflect your changes. If the numbers specified are too high and Ventura will not reload, then delete the VPWIN.INF file from the Ventura directory. (NOTE: You cannot specify more RAM than you actually have available.) Q: Takes too long to load VPWIN A: Rename ENVIRONMENT.WID to a new width table name. Then use that width table in your style sheets. The ENVIRONMENT.WID table is rebuilt from the fonts listed in the Windows printer driver and your WIN.INI file each time it is loaded. You really do not need to rebuild it until new soft fonts are added. DIFFERENCES BETWEEN GEM & WIN VERSIONS Q: Printing Multiple Copies A: Choose Printer Setup and select number of copies in the printer driver dialog box or select "Collated" in the Print dialog box to enable the multiple copies entry box. Q: "DOS File Ops" (Operations) gone from the VPWin file menu. A: Windows offers the File Manager, as well as the DOS shell, a keystroke or two away without exiting VPWindows. Use this option to perform the same tasks (they offer much more flexibility.) Q: ESC does not clear the entry from dialog boxes as it does in the GEM version instead it closes the dialog box. A: In Windows, ESC is used to cancel out of dialog boxes. When numerical entry is highlighted, simply begin typing. Any highlighted area in a dialog box will automatically be erased and what is being input will take its place. PRINTING/FONT DIFFICULTIES Q: Printing takes too long to PostScript printer Download the header when turning on your printer (typically once each day) instead of downloading for each job. The Download Each Job is the default in Windows 3.0 but can be changed within the Printer Setup/Options dialog box. Q: "Orientation does not match" message when printing In addition to changing the orientation within Ventura (Chapter/ Page Layout) the orientation must also be changed in the Printer Setup Dialog Box. Q: Print to filename may no longer appear as an option in VPWin. A: Connect the printer to port FILE in the Windows Control Panel. A dialog box from Windows will be presented to name this print file. It can be named with .C00 extension or any extension.( One option is to install your printer twice, once connected to your printer port and once connected to FILE.) Q: Supplemental Adobe Fonts do not show on screen but print O.K. A: According to Adobe, only Rev. 3 fonts are fully compatible with Windows 3.0. These fonts will print and display on screen. Earlier versions of Adobe will print but do not necessarily display correctly within VP Windows. Adobe has available a free or minimal cost upgrade from Rev. 2 to Rev. 3. You can call them at 1-800-83FONTS. Q: Quotation marks, Trademarks, etc. do not print from HP/PCL printer. A: The Symbol font must be generated by Bitstream for all PCL printers. Select PostScript Symbol for Character Set in the Bitstream Control Panel to generate the Symbol Font. Q: Have problems with HP III printing rotated and reverse text. A: HP has a new driver that fixes these problems found in the driver that shipped with Windows. It can be obtained on the HP Forum on CIS or by calling HP Directly at 303-353-7650 MISCELLANEOUS QUESTIONS Q: Paintbrush drawings do not come through the clipboard. Only line art (from packages such as Designer, Corel Draw! and Arts & Letters) and ASCII text is supported through the clipboard. Bitmapped images are not supported in the Clipboard. Q: Some lines only have rounded ends A: Due to a programming consideration within Windows, Graphics lines will not allow squared ends. Use ruling lines to achieve your choice of ends selected through Line Attributes. Q: Charts from Excel come across the clipboard without color A: Once you have created and selected your chart within Excel hold the Shift key while selecting the Edit menu. You should see and click "Copy Picture" not just "Copy." Within VP create a frame then choose Edit/Paste Metafile. Give the pasted Excel chart a name when asked. Chart will appear in color.
