MICROSOFT PROJECT FOR WINDOWS 
WORKING MODEL -- IMPORTANT INFORMATION

This disk contains the files you need to set up and run the Working Model,
a special preview edition of Microsoft Project for Windows.  A preview edition
of Microsoft Windows 3.0 is also included.  The preview edition of Microsoft
Windows will only run applications that have been set up as demo applications.

The Microsoft Project Working Model includes a complete on-line Help system, 
but not the on-line Tutorial provided with the complete product.  The Working 
Model has been modified so that you cannot print, and you can only save 
projects that contain no more than 25 tasks or resources. 

Feel free to copy these disks and distribute them to friends or coworkers.

INSTALLING THE WORKING MODEL

Some of the Working Model files are in a compressed format on these disks.  
To install the Working Model, place Disk #1 in your disk drive and type: 

                          a:

and press Enter to change to the A drive.  Then, at the A> prompt, type:

                          setup

and press Enter.  Substitute the appropriate drive letter if your disk 
drive is not drive A.  Then, follow the instructions on your screen. 

IF YOU ALREADY HAVE WINDOWS 3.0

If you already have Windows 3.0 installed on your system, Setup installs the 
Working Model files in a subdirectory called TRYPROJ in your Windows 3.0 
directory (for example, C:\WIN3\TRYPROJ). 
 
Starting the Working Model

After running Setup, start the Working Model by double-clicking the Microsoft 
Project icon in the Microsoft Working Models group, or select it and press 
Enter.  To open the main Working Model sample file, choose the File Open 
command after you are in Microsoft Project, select WORKMODL.MPP and choose OK. 
                     
IF YOU DO NOT HAVE WINDOWS 3.0

If you do not have Windows 3.0 installed on your system, Setup installs a 
special preview edition of Windows 3.0 along with the Working Model files.  
Note that this is a partial version of Windows 3.0; the Control Panel and 
Clipboard are not included, so if you use the Control Run command you will get
an error message such as "Cannot Load CLIPBRD.EXE."

Setup places the Windows files needed to run the Working Model in a directory 
called C:\WINDEMO or in a directory of your choice.  The Working Model files 
are in a subdirectory called TRYPROJ (for example, C:\WINDEMO\TRYPROJ).

Starting the Working Model

After installing the Windows and Working Model files, Setup gives you the 
option to either restart Windows or return to the system prompt.  If you 
restart Windows, double-click the Microsoft Project icon in the Working Models 
group, choose the File Open command after you are in Microsoft Project, select 
WORKMODL.MPP and choose OK. 

If you have returned to the System prompt, type:

                         windemo

and press Enter to start the preview edition of Microsoft Windows.  Then, 
start Microsoft Project and open the sample file as described under "Starting 
the Working Model" in this section.
 

SAMPLE FILES

For a quick tour of the features of Microsoft Project for Windows, follow the 
steps in the Working Model booklet.  The examples in the booklet are based on 
the sample file WORKMODL.MPP. 

Other sample files are included on this disk.  To open them, Choose File Open, 
select a filename, and press Enter.  Each sample file has its own view file:  
the view files (.MPV extension) control the appearance of the project views, 
and demonstrate how Microsoft Project can be customized.  To open one of the 
view files, choose the View Define Views command, choose the Open button, and 
select the name of a view file. 

RESTORING YOUR SYSTEM AFTER USING THE WORKING MODEL

After you are done using the working models, you can remove
the working model files from your hard disk.  To do this, follow
these steps:

1. On your hard disk, locate your version of Microsoft Windows.  
   If you know you have the full version of Windows 3.0, skip 
   to step #3.  If you know you have a demonstration version of 
   Windows 3.0, skip to step #2.  If you are not sure which 
   version of Windows 3.0 you are running, run WINVER from your 
   Windows directory.  Winver will report the version of Windows
   it finds in the directory.  If it says "Windows Version 3.00"
   or something very similar, you have the full version of 
   Windows 3.0.  If it says something like "Windows working model" 
   or "Windows application enabler," you have a demonstration 
   version of Windows.

2. Follow this step only if you have a demonstration version 
   of Windows, and no longer want to use it.  Change directories 
   to your Windows directory (probably C:\WINDEMO).  Type DEL *.*, 
   and then type Y at the "Are you sure?" prompt.  Change directories 
   to the SYSTEM subdirectory and type DEL *.* again.  This procedure
   will remove all the Windows files.

3. To remove a particular working model, change directories to
   your Windows directory (probably C:\WINDOWS or C:\WINDEMO).
   Look for the subdirectory containing the working model you
   want to delete.  Delete any such directories.  Then type
   DEL ENABLER.* in your Windows directory.

4. To restore your CONFIG.SYS file to its original condition,
   see the following section.


RESTORING YOUR CONFIG.SYS FILE

In order to set up your computer to work with Windows 3.0 based working models, 
the Setup program modifies your CONFIG.SYS file by adding the HIMEM.SYS device 
driver.  HIMEM.SYS is an extended memory driver, and other extended memory 
drivers may conflict with it.  Some programs you own may require these other 
memory drivers.  If this is the case, when you are done using the working 
model(s), you can restore your CONFIG.SYS file to its original condition by 
doing the following: 

1. Change to the root directory on the drive on which you boot your system
   (such as C:).  Then type DIR CONFIG.*  If Setup changed your CONFIG.SYS 
   file, you should see CONFIG.SYS and a backup file (most likely CONFIG.OLD).

2. To make sure the backup file is the version you want to restore,
   type TYPE CONFIG.OLD to display the contents of the file.

3. If it is the correct version, type COPY CONFIG.OLD CONFIG.SYS.

4. Reboot your computer by pressing the Ctrl+Alt+Del.

USING THE WORKING MODEL WITH A LAN MANAGER 2.0 NETWORK

If you are using LAN Manager 2.0 or Novell networks with the netpopup service 
running and you do not already have Windows 3.0 installed, you may have 
problems running the demonstration version of Windows 3.0 included in this 
package.  To correct this, turn off the netpopup service before using the 
working model.  

To do this with a LAN Manager 2.0 network, type the following
from DOS:

                         NET PAUSE NETPOPUP

To do this with a Novell network, type the following from DOS:

                         CASTOFF ALL
