Date January 8,1988 Number: 205 Title: NE1000 Driver Update A revision to the Shell Driver for the NE-1000 Network Interface Card is now being tested and will be available beginning Wednesday January 13, 1988. The driver will be available for downloading from NetWire. The new driver resolves the majority of the reported problems with the NE-1000 workstation Network Interface Card (NIC). Novell is continuing its development on the NE-1000 with respect to the hardware, the operating system driver, and the workstation driver. Additional updates may be made available as they are developed and tested. Customers presently experiencing difficulty with the NE-1000 as a workstation NIC should download the driver from NetWire. Customers needing access to NetWire may call 1-800-848-8199 (contentiental U.S.except Ohio residents) International and Ohio residents may call (614) 457-0802. The new workstation driver does not require an RMA of the board itself. Therefore, customers should not request a Return Material Authorization. The problems corrected by this driver are as follows: 1. Stations "hang" or "lock up" which then requires a hard reset of the system. 2. Stations lose their connection which requires that the station be re-booted and the shell re-loaded. Customers that are using NE-1000 boards in file servers, should remember the following as explained in the "NEW PRODUCT INFORMATION" packet regarding the NE-1000. That is the NE-1000 is not intended for use in file server hosting more that five workstations. In addition, they are not intended for five station networks when the network will be subjected to heavy load situations.
