Tape Timer 1.0 by T. Shannon Gilvary Tape Timer is a program designed to aid the home music enthusiast in creating cassette tapes from albums or CD's etc. You enter the song titles and the times and the program will calculate the total time of all the songs. You then have the option of selecting songs to place on the tape and the program will calculate the time of all songs selected and will also calculate how much time is remaining on the tape once a tape length has been entered. You can then print this information for reference while taping. One feature of the program is side-splitting. Given the information such as song times and tape length, the program will split the songs into sides A and B automatically. This information can then be edited and/or customized to your tastes. Tape Timer also allows you to save the selected songs in a file. Say you have all your CD's on file already and you wish to create a mix tape of your favorite songs from those albums. Recall the albums which contain those songs, select them, and save them to the same file. Load this file and you have a list of all the songs you want on this tape. Then treat it like any other album. The Command Line A = Add This allows you to add songs to the end of the song list or enter songs on an empty one. D = Del(ete) This is used to delete songs from the list. E = Edit Use this to edit songs in the list. You will be prompted for the number of the line to edit. Enter this number and the cursor will appear on the appropriate line. If the existing information is correct, press return and it will default to the old information (don't worry that it doesn't show up until after you press return, it's still there). Enter the name of the song and/or the time in the format MMM:SS. H = Help Displays the help screens. Press Q to quit or any other key to go to the next page. I = Info Enter the album info eg Artist, Title of album, year released, record company. This information will appear at the bottom of the screen and will be written to the file using Write. Press return to use the old information. L = Load Loads a previously saved file from disk. See Write and saVe. N = New Erase all current information from screen. This option does not clear the Tape length. You will be asked to confirm whether or not you wish to erase all current information. This is done to protect the dummies like me who like to think they can type but often hit the wrong key. Enter Y or N at the prompt. S = Sel(ect) This option allows you to select all or part of the songs in the list to be included in the calculations. "A" will select all songs in the list. "S" is the Auto split feature. Choose this to allow the computer to suggest which songs should go on what side depending on the tape length. If a tape length of 0 is entered, no songs will be selected. Enter the number or range of songs to select, eg 1-4 will select songs 1, 2, 3 and 4. You will be prompted for the side of the tape you wish these songs to appear on. Enter A or B. T = Tape (Length) Enter the length of the tape in the format MMM:SS. U = Unsel(ect) This option allows you to unselect a song from the list. Enter the number of the song to unselect. P = Page If more than 16 songs have been entered there will be more than one page. Enter the number of the page you wish to go to. The page number appears on the upper right hand corner of the screen. R = pRint Print the selected songs, times, and sides. Q = Quit Exit the program. You will be asked to confirm the quit. V = saVe Save selected songs and times to a file. Use this option when you wish to create one tape of songs that are on many different albums. W = Write Save the entire song list to disk. This option saves the titles, times and album info for the list. Files are saved in text format and can be easily imported into other applications. Total Time = total time of songs on list Selected Time = total time of selected songs Tape Length = the length in minutes and seconds of the tape as entered by the user Time Left = the amount of time available on the tape (tape length - Selected time) Side A = total time of songs selected for side A Left = time remaining on side A Side B = total time of songs selected for side B Left = time remaining on side B Songs with * next to them have been selected. The side will appear after the time of the song. Please remember the information gained from the use of this program is only as accurate as the information entered. To my knowledge, all calculations are correct. Some helpful hints: If you find that the times on the jacket of the album are inconsistent with the times on the record or CD, change them to the more accurate times. This will save you a great many headaches such as when the computer says the songs will fit and they don't. Enter the actual tape length. Many 90 minute tapes are actually 94 minutes long (47 minutes per side). The tapes must be at least as long as the markings say they are but are often times longer. If you don't, the worst that can happen is that you have a couple of minutes extra at the end of the tape but those extra minutes might be enough to fit another song.
