To use this program with GEOS, you MUST set GWE to print using BIOS. This is done by running PREFERENCES and clicking on the COMPUTER icon. From there, choose the BIOS button for LPT1:. After this is done, exit to DOS and run the VPRINT program using the following switches: VPRINT filename.ext /b64 /p1 /i This will setup the VPRINT program to intercept the output to LPT1: and store the data in a file called "filename.ext". (or what ever filename you select). WHY ARE WE DOING THIS? ---------------------- Say for instance, you have a friend or know of a company with a color post- script printer, but they are not wize enough to purchase Geoworks Ensemble. Now then, you have been itching to see how your favorite GeoDocument would look if it was printed on this printer, but you can't convince the owner to loan it to you for a couple of days. Ahhh, VPRINT saves the day!!!! You simply load VPRINT, enter GeoWorks and change your printer to the color post- script printer and print the file as you normally would. After you exit GW, you find a nice long file (about 3 or 4 megs) has magically appeared on your hard drive. Archive the file, copy it to a floppy, and take it to the computer that's hooked up to the color printer. Copy the file to the hard drive and decompress it. Next, just copy it to LPT1: using the binary switch! For example if the file is named FILENAME.EXT, you would type the following: copy /b filename.ext lpt1: Thats it! You don't even need a printer hooked up to ypur system to use this program. There is, however, one small drawback... WARNING ------- DO NOT ATTEMPT TO ACCESS THE HARD DRIVE FROM GEOWORKS WHILE THIS PROGRAM IS RUNNING. ANY ATTEMPT TO ACCESS THE DRIVE WHILE VPRINT IS INTERCEPTING OUTPUT WILL RESULT IN AN IMMEDIATE CRASH, LOCKING UP YOUR SYSTEM AND POSSIBLY DAMAGING SOME OF YOUR FILES. SINCE SOMETHING AS SIMPLE AS CLICKING ON A MENU CAN ACCESS THE HARD DRIVE, I FOUND IT BEST JUST TO LEAVE THE SYSTEM TOTALLY ALONE UNTIL THE PRINT PROCESS IS COMPLETE! Warp.
