I first saw Graphic Light back in the middle Seventies when the Baltimore Type Foundry was closing down and selling off its remaining stock of metal types. I liked it, but I donÕt clearly know why. Maybe it was its unusual ÒftÓ ligature, maybe the small x-height. I bought lots of it, in several sizes, and even set a few small pamphlets in it. When Macintosh came along, Graphic Light was one of countless typographical treasures that I was no longer able to use. So, since no big company is likely to reproduce it, and since Fontographer 3.0 makes the work so easy, I have done it myself. It is a Christmas gift to any and all from The Underground Grammarian. I have included the Fontographer outline file so that you can do things to it, but do be respectful. You may, for instance, want to add for your own use an ÒffiÓ ligature. The original had only Òft,Ó Òff,Ó Òfi,Ó Òfl,Ó and Òffl.Ó You could do others very easily, usually with nothing more than a Get Part. But donÕt go crazy. DonÕt slant it! It had no italic to begin with, and doesnÕt need one. If you use it for blocks of text, always try it first set solid, that is, with a line spacing equal to its size, 12 on 12, for instance. The face, because of its small x-height, is very small on the body, and the lines will fly apart with too much leading. Since youÕre setting type on a computer, you can even use a negative leading. I have made a few attractive pages using 13 point type leaded 12.5 points. Works well. The bitmap sizes included are 12, 13, 14, 18, 24, and 48. The first three have been edited in Fontastic Plus, but with no intention to make them look like the type face--a silly enterprise. The 24 and 48 came out well enough that they need (for my taste) nothing more. But the 18 is a mess, and it has not been touched. Fix it if you like, or do what I do and live with it. And a Merry Christmas to all from Richard Mitchell Associate Circulation Editor The Underground Grammarian Post Office Box 203 Glassboro, NJ 08028 To install this font you need only two of the files in this archive: The PostScript file should be dropped into your System Folder. The PostScript file is the one named ÒGraphLigÓ. The contents of the bitmap file should be installed into your System file with the Font/DA Mover version 3.8 or above. Use the standard procedure for installing a bitmap font file. The bitmap file is the one named ÒGraphicLight.bmapÓ. If you have trouble doing this, double check that you are using Font/DA Mover version 3.8. When Font/DA Mover 3.8 is running, you will see the number 3.8 in the top left corner of the menu bar. All the other files you can ignore, unless you have Fontographer 3.0.
