Greetings! ~~~~~~~~~~ Two font-changing programs are enclosed: FLIP-VGA.COM and FLIP-EGA.COM. Use the one which corresponds to the type of monitor you have. Nothing will blow up if you use the wrong one (at least we don't think so - our testers were afraid to try). When the "FLIP" program is loaded all letters, numerals and punctuation marks will appear "upside down" on the monitor screen. This practical utility may be used, for example, if your monitor is overturned during an earthquake. No need for manual labor - simply run "FLIP" and continue working. Or let's say your back is hurting and you need to lie down. No problem! Run "FLIP" and lie on your back with your head closest to the computer. When you look up at the monitor every letter will be right-side-up. There are hundreds of other applications which will surely come to mind, not the least of which is that of playing a practical joke on a friend or co-worker. First test ~~~~~~~~~~ When "FLIP" is loaded your DOS prompt will be inverted, and any commands you type will not only be upside-down, but also backwards. This is confusing, so take your time. The first word you will type in inverted letters is OVER followed by "Enter" to run OVER.COM which will show you what an inverted text really looks like. To read it, you may either stand on your head or turn your monitor over. The inverted text will give you instructions for creating your own inverted text, should you be moved to try it. You will find there is a bit more to creating an upside-down text file than simply running a program which inverts each letter. Installing into AUTOEXEC.BAT ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Why anyone would want to do this is beyond us, but here is how to install inverted fonts into the AUTOEXEC.BAT file in such a way that inversion will occur when the computer is started: Use a text editor to insert the following line into the AUTOEXEC.BAT file - FLIP-VGA (or FLIP-EGA for EGA systems.) In addition, be sure the correct "FLIP" program is on the boot disk (the easiest place to put it is in the root directory). An alternative command which will install the program as a memory-resident program is - FLIP-VGA R (or FLIP-EGA R for EGA systems.) The "R" installs the program as a memory-resident program. It will remain in operation even if other programs are run. Ordinarily it will terminate when the computer is turned off and restarted, but if it is in the AUTOEXEC.BAT file it will load again at the next boot-up! The only way to disable it will be to remove the command from the batch file - a difficult procedure with all letters inverted. When placing "FLIP" into the AUTOEXEC.BAT, it is less fiendish to omit the "R" from the command. Without the "R" the program can be disabled by typing MODE CO80 and pressing the Enter key. We recommend omitting the "R" to avoid the difficulty of removing the program from the system. Font Mania ~~~~~~~~~~ The "FLIP" programs were made with the new font editing program FONT MANIA, also known as FONT-M.EXE. This program has many other uses, and must be seen to be fully appreciated. It is available in Compuserve's IBM Hardware Forum (go IBMHW) in Lib.3 (Video). It may be found with the keyword REXXCOM. Find other great programs by using REXXCOM as the keyword in these Compuserve forums: IBMAPP (Lib.10), IBMPRO (Lib.6), IBMNEW (Lib.6), IBMSYS (Lib 1). If you would like to make TIG (text-in-graphics) files like README.COM, it's actually easier than you might think. You can do it with REXXCOM programs which may be found in IBMAPP (Lib.10).
