Here's a method of backing up and restoring users, groups, directories, and trustees when you don't have a NW3.x-aware tape drive. It's similar to a method I recommended in the past that used LARCHIVE. You might also use this method if you were going to upgrade your 3.x server hardware. The basic method is to use your existing tape backup software to backup all the files and directories, and NBACKUP to backup the bindery, directories, trustee info, and EXCLUDE all files. Then, use NBACKUP to restore this info to the new server, and then restore the files into the already created directories. This brings up the major drawback of this method - that is, if you have trustee assignments for individual files, this won't get them. It WILL get all attributes and trustee assignments for directories. WARNING! IF SETTING UP THE NEW SERVER MEANS TEARING DOWN THE OLD ONE, YOU SHOULD HAVE AT LEAST TWO GOOD BACKUPS FIRST, INCLUDING FILES AND THE INFORMATION SAVED BY NBACKUP. An alternate approach if both the source and destination server are running on the net, is to use NBACKUP to transfer bindery, directories, trustees, etc, and use NCOPY to move the files themselves. Here's the procedure. Login as SUPERVISOR or equivilent. In the root of a volume to be backed up (SYS: in this example), create a directory called SYSBACK (or, whatever you want). From the root, execute NBACKUP. F:\>md sysback F:\>nbackup You will get a menu like this: ÉÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍ» º Select the desired Device º ÌÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍ͹ º ³DOS Devices º º ³Wangtek Tape Drive º ÈÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍͼ Highlight "DOS Devices" and press enter. F:\SYSBACK> You will need to transfer these files to the new system before they can be restored. If the new system is already up and running on the Network, you can just copy them thru the net, OR, just set the destination in NBACKUP. If the server cannot be attached to the net, transfer these files via floppy disk (or, tape backup for that matter). Once you have transfered these files over to the new server, you need to make sure that it's name is the same as the old server, otherwise, the bindery (which contains the users and groups) won't restore. If both the old server and the new server were running on the same net, you'll need to shut both down, and bring up the new server with the old name. If you didn't want it to have the same name, that's ok, once you've got everything restored you can bring it down and change it. At this point, I assume that the target server is up and running, and the SYSBACK files have been transfered somehow to a new directory on the new server called SYSBACK (this is just the name I picked for this example, use whatever you want). Execute the NBACKUP program on the new server.
