Preferred SYSTEMS, Inc. 2 Corporate Drive Trumbull, CT. 06611 203-459-1115 INSTRUCT.TXT Date: December 10, 1991 Version 1.3.011 ORIGEN ZIP FILE DEMO, Version 1.3.011 Hardware requirements: Origen requires 640K and DOS 3.3 or higher. TSRs must not be resident. Files should be set to 25 and buffers to 10. A minimum of two megabytes of storage is needed on the file server or hard drive. ORIGEN DEMO * Unzip the files in ORIDEMO.ZIP and copy them to a hard drive, network drive or on to a high density floppy diskette. Make the drive\directory with the files your current drive\directory, type ORIDEMO and press Enter. To appreciate the steps that Origen completes during the logical configuration of your file server, open the program and choose Configure from the main menu, then Execute. This is a simulated configuration of a file server. You are reading the messages that Origen generates during Execution, but the demo will NOT configure your file server, overwrite your login script, or assign trustee rights. Like the real program, once the demo has simulated the logical configuration of your server, it locks all options except Reports, Transfer/Export, and Configure/Undo. To examine the rest of the Origen options, choose Undo. Examine the Origen menu options, adding to, deleting, or changing the demo data that was included on the disk. 1. SYSTEM menu: Set File Server Defaults. Import and edit Login Script template. 2. GROUP menu: Create workgroups and application groups. Assign trustee rights. 3. USER menu: Add users and assign them to groups. 4. REPORTS menu: Review report onscreen or print. Customize title page of reports. 5. TRANSFER menu: Use Export to back up the server configuration to another drive. 6. CONFIGURE menu: Execute server. Go to the reports menu to check the ORIGEN.LOG and PASSWORD.LOG. After you Undo, check the UNDO.LOG. LIFETIME DOCUMENTATION -- READING THE BINDERY Origen reads an existing file server's bindery even if the server was not initially configured with Origen, and produces reports documenting the existing server: groups, users, trustee rights, group configuration, and file server defaults. 1. Type BIND2ORI and press Enter. Your userid and default server will display in the upper right corner of the screen. 2. SELECTIONS menu: Choose which server to read. The menu box lists the attached servers where you have supervisor rights. Mark Groups on the selected server as Application Group or Work Group, or Not Selected (in which case Origen does not record information about the group's trustee assignments). You MUST enter this menu and press to confirm your choices (even if you accept the defaults), in order to read the server's bindery. Specify Output: Type the directory path where files should be stored. If Origen export files are already stored there, you will be asked if you want to overwrite them. Execute: Execute when all values for server, groups, destination path, and filters if any, have been selected. 3. FILTERS menu: Origen automatically skips each user's home directory and mail directory, but you can add filters to screen out other trustee rights, such as every user's access to an electronic mail system. 4. RESULTS menu: You may view or print the BIND2ORI.LOG. We recommend that you import the files created by reading the bindery into Origen, for reports that document your groups, users, trustee rights, group configuration, and file server defaults. This is a simulated reading of a file server bindery. The Origen demo program is limited to recording the first five users and the first five groups found on the selected server.
