The enclosed WR0587 disk contains this filter, and this application note gives instructions for installing the filter for use with Publisher. Installation Instructions ------------------------- 1. Insert the enclosed WR0587 disk in the appropriate floppy disk drive. 2. From Windows Program Manager, start File Manager. From the File menu, choose Copy. 3. In the From box, type the letter of the drive in which you inserted the WR0587 disk, followed by "\*.*" (without the quotation marks). 4. In the To box, type the path to your Windows directory (usually "c:\windows" [without the quotation marks]), followed by "\msapps\textconv" (without the quotation marks). The MSAPPS subdirectory is normally found in your Windows directory. The TEXTCONV subdirectory is where the Microsoft Publisher Setup program installed Publisher's other text converters. 5. Choose the OK button. File Manager will then copy the WORDWIN2.CNV file from the enclosed disk to the directory you specified. Close or minimize File Manager and return to Program Manager. 6. Start Notepad (usually found in the Accessories group). 7. From the File menu, choose Open. In the File Name box, type "win.ini" (without the quotation marks). In the Drives box and the Directories box, select the drive and directory where Windows is located. 8. Choose the OK button. 9. When the WIN.INI file opens in Notepad, find the [text converters] section. It will look something like this: [MSWord Text Converters] WrdPrfctDOS50=WordPerfect 5.0,D:\WIN31\msapps\textconv\wpft5.cnv,* WrdPrfctDOS=WordPerfect 5.1,D:\WIN31\msapps\textconv\wpft5.cnv,* MSWordWin=Word for Windows 1.x,d:\win31\msapps\textconv\wordwin1.cnv,doc Windows Write=Windows Write,D:\WIN31\msapps\textconv\writwin.cnv,wri MSWorksWin=Works for Windows 2.0,D:\WIN31\msapps\textconv\wrkswin.cnv,wps MSPub=Windows Publisher,D:\WIN31\msapps\textconv\mswinpub.cnv,pub MSWordDos=Word for DOS,D:\WIN31\msapps\textconv\worddos.cnv,doc MSWorksDos=MS Works,D:\WIN31\msapps\textconv\wrksdos.cnv,wps Type the following at the bottom of the list: wordwin2=word for windows 2.0,\wordwin2.cnv,doc where is the path to the subdirectory where you copied WORDWIN2.CNV in step 4 above. For example, if you copied the file to D:\WIN31\MSAPPS\TEXTCONV, type the following: wordwin2=word for windows 2.0,d:\win31\msapps\textconv\wordwin2.cnv,doc 10. From the File menu, choose Save to save the changes to your WIN.INI file. Then choose Exit to close Notepad. 11. From the File menu in Program Manager, choose Exit Windows to end your Windows session, then restart Windows. The Word for Windows text-conversion filter is now installed. Be sure to store the enclosed WR0587 disk in a safe place. If you ever have to reinstall Publisher, you will also need to reinstall this text converter.
