LOWCASE.EXE Version 1.8, 1 Mar 1993 Copyright (C) 1992-1993 Jack J. Chandler Have read many queries on program to convert the names in the PAF NAME2.DAT file to lower case. This program does just that. LOWCASE.EXE can be used with no charge as long as not modified in any way. Program can be distributed as desired for the FREE use of any and all users of PAF. There is no error checking and program may crash if it runs into bad data in the NAME2.DAT file. If NAME2.DAT file cannot be found, you will be asked to re-enter or to quit the program Be sure you have the correct location of your data files and try again. Some names may not be correctly converted. MCDERMITT will be converted as McDermitt. MC DERMITT will be converted as Mc Dermitt. MAC DERMITT will be converted as Mac Dermitt. See later for conversion of MACDERMITT or MACDONALD type 'Mac' names that do not have a space in the fourth character position. J.J.CHASE will be converted as J.J.Chase. J. J. CHASE will be converted as J. J. Chase. JOHN HENRY, ESQ will be converted as John Henry, Esq, JOHN HENRY,ESQ will be converted as John Henry, Esq, O'MALLEY will end up O'Malley, and JONES-BUCK will end up Jones-Buck. JONES/BUCK will end up as Jones/Buck. JOHN'S TAVERN will be converted as John's Tavern. Other names with special prefixes are not converted as they cannot be distinguished from common names with the same initial letters. Examples: names starting with 'de' are confused with names such as Delmond, Dennis, etc. Special procedure with a query as with the 'Mac' names is not offered in this version since the number of mis-hits is considered too great. Names in parenthes or with a preceding question mark will be converted as (WIDOW SMITH) to (Widow Smith) and ?WIDOW SMITH to ?Widow Smith. Roman Numerals in the title field or in a name field, if separated from other data by a space, will be left in upper case. This will hold for those numerals up to XXXIX (39 arabic). Therefore, a name like KING JAMES VII will be converted as King James VII. The two letter upper case postal abbreviations for the U.S. states will be maintained. If you have intered these in your data base, you will not lose them. MASSACHUSETTS will be converted to Massachusetts, MA will remain MA, N.Y. will remain N.Y. and NY will remain NY. Version 1.6 includes also the listed two letter codes for foreign countries and for Canadian provinces. Also the integrity of the upper case three letter abbreviations USA, ENG, and IRE are retained. Version 1.8 includes option of selecting to convert the 'Mac' names. ll can be converted, one converted, or

rompted for conversion. When a name of this type is encountered under the

rompted selection, the name will be displayed with the first character in upper case, the next two characters in lower case, the remainder in upper case. Example: MacDONALD. The query to convert the 'D' to lower case requires a 'Y' or 'N' input. If you desire MacDonald, answer 'N', for Macdonald answer 'Y'. The remaining characters will then be converted to lower case. 'Mac' type names are not converted nor prompted for conversion if the at least three characters do not follow the 'Mac'. The name 'MACK' will be converted to 'Mack'. Then name 'MACKE' will be converted to 'Macke'. The name 'MACKAY' will be converted to 'MacKay'. Of these only 'MACKAY' will offer the conversion prompt. Version 1.8 corrects small bug which improperly converted names in which the first three or four characters represented a Roman Numeral. Version 1.8 also corrected improper conversion of characters that followed the quotation mark and several others without an intervening space that were inadvertantly removed in version 1.6. This should give you an idea of what to expect and where to look for names you may need to edit from within PAF. Be sure you are working on a BACKUP copy of the NAME2.DAT file and check the modified file with FRCHK before discarding your original NAME2.DAT file. LOWCASE.EXE can be run from any drive:\directory.
