XTREE UPGRADE SUPPORTS WINDOWS FOR WORKGROUPS; ADDS PROGRAM LAUNCHING AND OTHER FEATURES SAN LUIS OBISPO, CA. -- Jan. 12, 1993 -- XTree Company announced that XTree for Windows 1.5 will not only support Microsoft Windows for Workgroups, but will contain a new Windows tool for menuing, scripting and program launching, edit and print features and drag and drop source capability. Expected to ship in late February, the product will retail for a price of $99 (U.S. ). This means that XTree for Windows users can "share," or make available their drive(s) and directories to other members of their workgroups. Data can be shared in read only, read and write or conditionally (based upon password). Moreover, shared drives and directories on other workgroup PCs can be accessed with XTree for Windows. XTree for Windows will also provide support for Microsoft's messaging application program interface (MAPI), giving users the ability to select one or more files and mail them as attachments to other users on Windows for Workgroups networks. Dynamic Data Exchange (DDE) and Network DDE (NetDDE) are also supported by XTree for Windows 1.5 through macro scripts in a new feature to be included with the upgrade -- a program launching utility. This will let users in Windows for Workgroups-based networks share information in real time with other DDE applications. This new Windows tool for menuing and scripting provides movable or fixed "toolbars" which can be used with specific applications. Each icon on the toolbar can perform functions such as launching applications, network log-on, file saving, etc. Functions can be defined by the user with a complete Visual Basic-compatible scripting/macro language and can even be executed on a time-scheduled basis. This new program launching feature in XTree for Windows can even act as a replacement for Windows' Program Manager, giving the user greater control over desktop operations. The new upgrade will also contain an enhanced Windows version of XTree's popular edit and print features. Any preferred editor may be installed and used. The print command allows binary, text or graphics files to be selected and printed or viewed and printed. Tree and directory windows may also be printed. Another exciting addition to the XTree for Windows upgrade is a drag and drop source capability, enabling files to be dragged outside of XTree and dropped onto other applications supporting this capability, such as Norton Desktop, Microsoft Windows 3.1 and Print Manager. In announcing XTree's support for Windows for Workgroups, Bob Kimball, XTree's vice president of marketing said, "XTree has always been responsive to the suggestions of its users. Our support of Windows for Workgroups makes obvious sense and is an extension to our expertise in traditional file and disk management."
