3D AUDIO - WHAT IS IT? You've heard of 3-D Video, But soon you'll be hearing lots about 3-D Audio. A program called QSound that makes the sound coming from two ordinary stereo speakers seem like it's all around you. Instead of hearing two distinct channels, left and right, QSound's sounds can be placed anywhere around you, making the experience much richer and much closer to live sound. QSound can be implemented in two ways. Recording studios can use it during the final mix (when multiple audio tracks are combined into two stereo tracks). The filtering system lets the engineer place the sounds anywhere within a 360 degree space. So far many popular recording artists have used QSound in recordings. In film, it was used in Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves. The other method is real time sound processing through DSP (Digital Signal processor) installed on a sound board. Computer games will be among the first packages to offer QSound on a PC. Virgin Games is already using it in the CD-ROM based games it makes for Sega Systems, and is expected to use the technology in future versions of its PC Games. EDITOR CLYDE ARNOLD BITS N' BYTES BBS
