WINTREK is a battle game in which the Enterprise takes on aliens who appear in Federation star space. WINTREK loads with a plethora of screens available to the Captain via the Master Control Panel. The action is viewed on the Short Range Screen and a Message Screen provides an ongoing log of the unfolding scenario. The battle is conducted using Navigation to position the Enterprise, which then fires phasers or photon torpedoes. Travel is at either Impulse Power or Warp Speed and Shields may be activated at varying strengths at the discretion of the Captain. Dilithium, which provides the power for all major Enterprise functions, is constantly monitored and must be carefully conserved. It does not require Terminal or any other commuications because WTIME is a 'dedicated' mini-communications program for this one purpose. Modem setup is a breeze, the default string will work for Hayes compatible modems. WTIME operates only at 1200 bps because that is the fastest speed now supported by the NIST! WTIME displays a conventional Window within which messages appear to report the progress of a call; the entire process takes about a minute. Three options exist for hanging up when a call is in progress. I think WTIME is terrific! WTIME is freeware and is the work of John Deurbrouck who published it in the Oct.27, 1992 issue of PC Magazine.
