The baker wanted to thank the King of Poland for protecting his � � country from a Turkish invasion, so he made a special hard roll in the � � King's honor. He designed the roll in the shape of a stirrup since � � horseback riding was the King's favorite pastime. The unique shape and � � the distinctive flavor of the bagel was born. � � � �*You could have been eating a "Epsicle" on a hot summer day instead of a � � popsicle. When Frank Epperson, at the tender age of eleven, left a � � mixture of powdered soda mix and water on the back porch one winter night � � in 1905 the popsicle was born. When Frank found the mixture the next � � morning it was frozen solid with the stirring stick still inside the jar, � � the soda frozen around it. Frank pulled the frozen soda out of the jar � � by the handle of the stir stick and licked it. The flavor was the same � � as that of the soda pop. He sat down and had the first Epperson icicle, � � later called the Epsicle and finally the Popsicle. Frank decided to call � � it the popsicle because it had been made from the powdered soda mix.
