Duel Version 1.0, Copyright 1993 By Matt Ebel. What is "Duel"? Duel is a two-player game in which each player tries to kill the other. The players move their characters around a maze filled with ropes, traps, teleporters and moving sidewalks, attempting to shoot the other player. Each player gets a set amount of Health and grenades, a gun, and an infinite amount of bullets with wich to acomplish the task. The Keys: Each player may Walk left, right and down; may jump up, left, and right; and may shoot bullets or throw a grenade. Player one's keys are as follows: ÚÄÄÄÄÄÄÄ¿ 4,6: Player walks one space to the left(4) or right(6). ³ / -³ Moving left or right will change the direction in ³ ³ which the player will shoot. ³7 8 9 ³ ³ ³ 2 : Player will climb down a rope, or will fall downwards ³4 5 6 ³ faster. This will change the shooting direction. ³ ³ ³ 2 3 ³ 8 : If player is standing on a floor, conveyor, or a rope, ÀÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÙ he(she?) will jump up one space. The player may also Jump up to if a rope is above him/her. Using the 8 key to jump will change the players shooting direction. 7,9: Same as jump, but the player will walk to the left or right one space after he jumps. Jumping left or right will _not_ change the players shooting direction. / : This is identical to jumping with the 8 key, but the player will not change his shooting direction. This is very useful if you want to jump over a hill while shooting. 5 : The player will shoot in the last direction he moved. Bullets do 1 point of damage to the other player (if they hit), and do not damage walls. 3 : The player will throw a grenade in the last direction he moved. Grenades do 5 damage to the other player, and will break one square out of a wall. (Warning: If you break a deep hole in the ground, you may get trapped inside. The only way to get out of a pit is by using an emergency teleporter.) - : By pressing the - key, the player activates an emergency teleporter. The emergency teleporter will teleport the player to a random location on the screen. The player will never be teleported onto traps, into walls, or onto ropes. And now, Player Two's keys: ÚÄÄÄÄÄÄÄ¿ A,D: Player walks one space to the left(4) or right(6). ³` ³ Moving left or right will change the direction in ³ ³ which the player will shoot. ³Q W E R³ ³ ³ Z,X: Player will climb down a rope, or will fall downwards ³A S D ³ faster. This will change the shooting direction. ³ ³ ³Z X C ³ W : If player is standing on a floor, conveyor, or a rope, ÀÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÙ he/she will jump up one space. The player may also Jump up to if a rope is above him/her. Using the 8 key to jump will change the players shooting direction. Q,E: Same as jump, but the player will walk to the left or right one space after he jumps. Jumping left or right will _not_ change the players shooting direction. ` : This is identical to jumping with the 8 key, but the player will not change his shooting direction. This is very useful if you want to jump over a hill while shooting. S : The player will shoot in the last direction he moved. Bullets do 1 point of damage to the other player (if they hit), and do not damage walls. C : The player will throw a grenade in the last direction he moved. Grenades do 5 damage to the other player, and will break one square out of a wall. (Warning: If you break a deep hole in the ground, you may get trapped inside. The only way to get out of a pit is by using an emergency teleporter.) R : By pressing the R key, the player activates an emergency teleporter. The emergency teleporter will teleport the player to a random location on the screen. The player will never be teleported onto traps, into walls, or onto ropes. At any time, either player may press the ESC key to abort the game. ABOUT THE DUEL EDITOR: Dueling another player on the levels provided is fun, but after a few thousand games, the levels may get a little bit boring. If this happens, you will be ecstatic about the "Duel Editor". The Duel Editor is an editor to allow you to build you own Duel levels. All you have to do is run "DUELEDIT.EXE" at the DOS prompt, and type "NEW" when asked what level to edit. Use the number-pad to move the cursor around the board, and use the following keys to design your own "Duel" levels: T : This will change the type of object to draw on the screen. Duel has 6 different types of objects: Floor (Blank spuare), Wall, Rope (To climb on, of course!), Conveyors (To move the players sideways), Traps (very painful),and Teleporters (To teleport to a preset location) C : This will change the current color of the selected object. When you are drawing conveyors, the C command will change the direction of the conveyor. <,>: Will toggle through the ASCII characters to represent the current object. Any object (excluding Teleporters, Floors, and Conveyors) may have any character to represent it, but I reccomend using "°","±","²", or "Û" for walls, and "³" and "Ä" for ropes. When drawing conveyors, the < and > keys do not change the character, but change the number of turns to pause before pushing the player sideways again. : Places the selected object under the cursor. D : Toggles "Draw" mode on and off. When draw mode is on, the selected object is placed under the cursor every time it moves. S : Will save the board under a new name. When the board is saved, you will be asked for each players starting coordinates (X,Y), their starting Hit Points, and their starting grenades. Be _sure_ to have this information on on hand _before_ you save the level. (WARNING: Be sure to type a valid filename when saving, or DUELEDIT will attempt to save the file with the invalid name, and in the process will really screw up the disk drive) Q : Quit DUELEDIT. When you are building your level, get another player and challenge him to a duel! If you enjoy playing "DUEL", and would like to see bug fixes, more levels, and more objects (Bombs, mines, MediKits, Computer players, and MORE!)...
