Furnace Springs Golf & Country Club Location: Arizona Desert Type: Original Length: Out: 3447 - In: 3402 Total: 6849 Play: Resort Style Design: (c) 1993, Gene Rodriguez III Furnace Springs is located somewhere in the Sonoran Desert just north of Phoenix, Arizona. A "desert links" style course, Furnace Springs' fairways follow the natural contours of the desert floor. The individual holes are nestled in canyons and dry stream beds and are thus isolated from each other, giving the golfer a sense of being alone within the natural environment. Surrounded by stands of saguaro cactus and rugged mountains, the course is given character by its numerous rocky outcrops and native flora. Golfers are advised to stay close to the fairways and cart paths due to the "wild" nature of the surrounding terrain... Furnace Springs is a course that demands accuracy off the tee. Due to strict environmental and water use restrictions, very little rough is provided outside the limits of the fairway. Any excursions off the cozy confines of the short grass are likely to be of an... exciting nature. For those of you interested in the design aspects of Furnace Springs, some items of interest include the cactus and my treatment of the surrounding hills. The cactus were captured from video of the 1992 Skins Tournament. After taping, the images were captured using a Computereyes R/T capture board and edited in Deluxe Paint II enhanced. These cacti have a less symmetrical look than the ones found on the JNUG Clip Art disk and have MUCH more realistic coloring. The first version of FS came in at 402K COMPRESSED! After consulting with Mike Bottari at Prodigy, it was determined that this was too large for their needs. By removing the hills I had created using elevation changes and cart path terrain (similar to the cliffs at #2), and replacing them with objects, I was able to reduce the size of the course by 25%. A quick look in the designer will reveal that the hills are created by placing one hill object on a one pixel "peak" of about 65 units. This object is then surrounded by a ring of hill objects that serve to "hide the scaffolding." I'd like to thank Mike Bottari and Dan Hecht at Prodigy for their help and input and Mark Willett (who else?) for some early play testing and comments. I'd also like to thank Mr. Runner and W. E. Coyote for their play test help (those ACME Jet Clubs really take few strokes off your game). I hope you enjoy your round(s) at Furnace Springs, and that it makes for some enjoyable tournaments. I'm ALWAYS willing to hear your comments and criticisms, so don't hesitate to let me know what you think.
