This book is distributed in a form that is designed
        to be easily accessible with the maximum range of computer
        and printer types. Because of this, many frills (such as
        fancy formatting) are omitted. To print the text of the
        book on your printer, you can use the command
        COPY HOWMIND.DOC PRN
        at the DOS prompt on IBM compatible computers. On other
        computers, use the equivalent command to send an ASCII text
        file to the printer. The HOWMIND.DOC file is in ASCII text,
        with page numbers and a form feed at the bottom of each
        page.
            Although most of this book is pure text, there are
        six graphic figures in chapter 1. These are provided as both
        PCX and GIF files in this package. The files FIG11.PCX (or
        FIG11.GIF) through FIG16.PCX (or FIG16.GIF) correspond to
        figures 1.1 through 1.6. Most people have some type of
        program capable of displaying and even printing these
        pictures. For example, if you have Windows 3.0 or 3.1, you
        can load the PCX files into the Windows Paintbrush program
        and have this program print out the pictures to almost any
        graphic printer (I recommend a 200% scaling while printing).
        There are also many shareware programs capable of displaying
        and/or printing GIF or PCX pictures. If the shareware picture
        viewer you have does not include print capability, you can
        load the GRAPHICS.COM program that comes with IBM DOS
        (assuming you have an IBM compatible computer) and use it to
        do a graphic screen dump. This package also includes an
        executable program for IBM PCs called ALLFIGS.EXE that will
        display all the figures on the screen at the same time. If
        you use GRAPHICS.COM to do a screen dump from ALLFIGS.EXE, I
        suggest you load GRAPHICS.COM with the GRAPHICS /R option.
            If you cannot print the pictures, they are not
        absolutely essential, since the text describes them.
