This issue is dedicated to add-ons, accessories and product announcements. Since many of these items are still smoke and mirrors (vapor ware), this listing should serve as a resource for ideas as to what can be done with Newt'. As one of the largest Apple dealers in the country, we're very excited about this little "figgey" and will do everything we can to stay on top of available products. If your company has a product (or a dream for one), let us know. I'll try to keep this catalog up to date, which may be impossible as this market explodes. I have divided this newsletter into three sections. The first contains excerpts from various press releases, the second gives additional information on the Newton, and the second is laid out as a catalog. Newtons' Lutions was designed using Syntax by Dialectic Systems. We certainly appreciated their participation in making this exciting new presentation media available. This excellent product is distributed as shareware. For more information on Syntax, Choose File - Open - SynHelp.Syn. Newton and the light bulb logo are trademarks of Apple Compu- ters. We appreciate your input. Email JohnR238@AOL.COM with your questions and comments. An extended version of the catalog is available in print which includes descriptions of each of the accessories. American Express is developing applications for its customers who will use Newton devices. "We are very excited about mobile computing and its potential applications for our customers--business travelers in particular," said John I Williams Jr., senior vice president. The Department of Defense is applying the Newton MessagePad to its health care operations. Final contract negotiations are underway for a project called ProMed, a joint effort between the DOD, Apple, and KPMG Peat Marwick. Apple has signed a deal with BellSouth's Mobile Systems Group for wireless communications products and services. MobileComm, the company's paging unit has committed to producing links between its local, regional, and national networks and the Newton. The PIE division of Apple has signed contracts with Sprint and BT North America, owner of Tymnet, for packet network access to future online services. Sprint will be primary contractor, BT North America the secondary. Ex Machina has announced the PocketCall Terminal program and Notify!, a Wireless Messaging system. Random House, GeoSystems, Pensee, Penmagic Software, and Blank, Berlyn & Co. have corroborated on the new Starcore titles. The following companies are announcing products for Newton: CE Software, Claris Corp., Fingertip, Great Plains, Integrated Systems, On Technology, Pastel & Pastel, Slate, and Strategic Mapping. These products range from specialized realty systems to titles for sports enthusiasts. Apple believes that there are three primary markets for Newton Technology. (1) The traditional retail customers who will benefit from the built-in communication and organization capabilities, add-on software titles, and future product designs. (2) corporate customers who will utilize custom developed applications and specialized features created by third party developers. (3) Manufacturers who have licenses the technology and will develop other products built on the foundation. The Newton Toolkit - which is due for fall shipment - will provide graphical layout capabilities, and will utilize both the NewtonScript programming language and built-in Newton components. It will support content, applications development, and authoring tools. Eastern Digital Resources announces that "The Newton Answer Book" is available now for $14.95. It connects to existing wide-area paging system, allowing numeric and text messages to be received. With the Messaging Card, Newton can receive information such as meeting confirmations, news and other services. The Messaging Card is a PCMCIA type II card, like the Newton's RAM storage cards. The Messaging Card fits over the top of Newton, and slides into the PCMCIA slot. It has 128 kb of static RAM storage space. The card is a single-frequency receiver in the 929-932 MHZ frequency band and features a built-in antenna. It is compatible with all POCSAG protocols including both 7 bit and 8 bit messaging formats and will be available with 512, 1200, or 2400 baud code speeds. The AAA battery will supply power for more than 21 days. It protects data when the main battery is low or being replaced. The card has an On/Off switch, a transducer, and a multicolor status indicator. A flashing green LED indicates unread messages, and a flashing red LED indicates a low battery. An audible alert indicates that radio- frequency (RF) information has been received. It will also alert you when you are out of paging range. The card can detect as many as four POCSAG addresses. Each address is capable of responding to four functions, and each function has a total of 32 subaddresses. There are 16 combinations of addresses and functions, each referred to as a source. The card will respond to a total of 512 individual subaddresses. The information supplied after the address can be either tone-only, 4 bit numeric, or 7 bit or 8 bit data. The card will also support OTA programming so the paging service provider can enable and disable the card's functions. You can program different Messaging Cards with the same address and functions and thereby accomplish group call and subgroup call to send identical messages to each Newton. (Way COOL!) There is no imposed restriction on the length or number of messages. The limit is defined by the available RAM. 6 NEWTON SPECIFICATIONS CPU Processor: ARM 610, 32 bit RISC Clock Speed: 20 MHZ/0 HZ (sleep mode) Custom ASIC Function: Glue and support logic for all hardware Package: 256 pin TAB Display Screen: DFSTN LCD without backlight Resolution 240 x 336 Display Size: 100.78 x 71.98 mm (3.96" x 2.83") Dot Pitch: 0.3mm Gray Level: Black and White Aspect Ratio: 1:1 Contrast Ratio 6.4:1 Tablet/Stylus Method: Analog transparent mylar resistive film Dimension: 129 x 88.5 x 1.35 mm Input Method: Stylus pen (no electronics), fingertip Stylus Pen: No cable, no switch Storage ROM: holds system/application, software and diagnostics Capacity 4 MB RAM: Capacity: 640 KB User Area: 192 KB Interfaces Infrared (IR) Interface Protocol: Half duplex communication Modulation: Amplitude shift keying (ASK) Carrier: Infrared ray (900 - 1050 nm) Transmission Rate: 19,200 bps max, guaranteed Horizontal Directivity: +/- 13 degrees Vertical Directivity: +/- 10 degrees Communication Range: 8 cm - 1 meter Serial Port Standard RS 232 / RS 422 Communication Rate up to 1.5 Mbps synchronous Connector 8 pin mini-DIN connector Speaker Frequency Range: 1 kHz - 10 kHz Volume Software control (four levels) Card Slot 7 Interface PCMCIA 2.0, Type II Number of slots 1 slot Controls: Eject button and Lock button Power Controls Single Toggle Switch Main Batteries Alkaline (AAA) or Nickel-Cadmium (NiCad) rechargeable battery pack 3 V DC nominal (2.2 VDC min.)
