LANtastic Network Operating System v4.00 Technical Bulletin Product Reviewed: Lotus 1-2-3 Release 2.3 by Lotus Development Corp. Classification: Spreadsheet Software Date: 12/10/91 Engineer: MH Compatibility Statement Lotus 1-2-3 Release 2.3 has been tested as compatible with LANtastic 4.x by Artisoft. This bulletin has been designed to help with the installation and setup of this product. Network Information Appendix A and B in the Lotus 1-2-3 Network Administrator's Guide do not cover LANtastic NOS. Instead, you may want to refer to the following sections for using Lotus 1-2-3 on NOS 4.0. The directory and path names are just suggested examples, which you may want to change for your installation. LANtastic Specific Information To Make Server Directories Available to Network Users 1. Log into the server machine as a user with sufficient rights to create directories, files, etc. 2. Create these sharable resources from NET_MGR with the specified access rights on the server machine. Recommended User/ Access Directory Directory Path Group Rights Resource Name 1-2-3 L:\LOTUS * R---L---E--- LOTUS program License L:\LOTSHARE * RWCMLDKNEAI- LOTSHARE Personal L:\USERS\ RWCMLDKNEAI- (or on each workstation's local harddisk) Shared L:\123DATA * RWCMLDKNEAI- 123DATA date Root L:\ * R---L---E--- . 3. Make sure that the program directory (L:\LOTUS in this case) is in the search path in each user's AUTOEXEC.BAT. To Connect to Server Directories 1. Log into the server that contains the program and license directories. net login \\ 2. Redirect a drive designation to the root directory which contains the license directory as its immediate subdirectory. Otherwise, you may get an error message saying that no license directory can be found. Please refer to p.42 of the Network Administrator's Guide for details. net use l: \\ 3. Make your 1-2-3 personal directory current, which contains your set-up files like 123.set, and invoke 123. The 1-2-3 program directory should be in your DOS search path. To Connect to Network Printers 1. Log into the server that contains the network printer as a sharable resource. 2. Redirect a port on the workstation to the server's printer. e.g. net use LPT1 \\\@printer 3. Users can then print to this LPT1 from 1-2-3 by selecting /Worksheet Global Default Printer Interface 5 The print settings can be saved as the default by selecting Quit Update Quit In Wysiwyg, users select :Print Config Interface 5 to print to LPT1 and then save the new settings as the default by Display Default Update 4. During our testing, printing to both local and network printers had been tested, and no functional difference (except that the printouts were routed to different printers) was noticed. However, Lotus recommends that printing to LPTx be tried if print problems with PARALLELx are encountered. Installing Lotus 1-2-3 To install Lotus 1-2-3 on the network, follow closely the steps outlined in the Summary of Installation on p.5 of the Network Administrator's Guide. The Solving Installation Problems section on p.9 of the Getting Started manual and chapter 6 If you have a problem of the Network Administrator's Guide provide answers to almost every problem we encountered during our testing, so make sure that you refer to those pages first if you run into difficulties. There's no recommended CONFIG.SYS setting for release 2.3. During our testing, FILES=40 and BUFFERS=40 were used. Multi-user sharing and locking are handled internally by Lotus 1-2-3 at the file level. Using 1-2-3 with Windows 3.0 This bulletin was created for Lotus 1-2-3, not the 1-2-3 for Windows product. However, 1-2-3 Release 2.3 works in Windows 3.0 as a standard DOS application. You can make use of the .PIF and .ICO files provided with the distribution by following the instructions on p.32 of the Getting Started manual. It may be necessary to specify your personal directory as the start-up directory from your PIF editor. Release 2.3 and Release 3.1 Plus This bulletin was created for Lotus 1-2-3 Release 2.3, not the Release 3.1 Plus product, which is a different product line offered by Lotus for 'heavier-duty' spreadsheet applications. Release 3.1 Plus requires a 286 or higher machine and 1M of RAM. It has not yet been tested by Artisoft for compatibility.
