Subject: SUBSCRIBE ULTRALITE-LIST

You have been added to list ultralite-list@grot.starconn.com.
Requests to listserv@grot.starconn.com.

Welcome to the UltraLite mailing list!

Purpose
=======

The purpose of the ultralite-list mailing list is to discuss the care and
feeding of the original NEC UltraLite notebook computer (the V30-based
notebook with a 1MB or 2MB silicon hard disk (not the newer 80X86-based
models).

A Quick Overview
================

This mailing list is automatically managed by UNIX Listserv version 5.5.
It works like this:

- When you subscribe, your e-mail address is added to the list of subscribers.

- A special e-mail address has been set up which distributes mail message
  to all of the subscribers.

- When you or any of the other subscribers send a mail message to that
special address, the message is retransmitted untouched (except for
some mail header tweaks) to the list's subscribers.

- Every so often, the accumulation of messages which have been sent to the
list are collected into a "digest" and archived. You can retrieve those
  archives.

- There are other features. Read on...

Special Addresses
=================

The special address you'll use to send mail to the list subscribers is:

  ultralite-list@grot.starconn.com

Compose your message in the same way you would any other mail message,
just remember that it is going to be delivered to a whole bunch of people.

The other special address you'll use is:

  listserv@grot.starconn.com

The listserv address is used for a variety of purposes, and mail sent to it
is automatically interpreted by the listserv program. For that reason,
you will need to compose the message in a particular way -- you're really
sending commands to the listserv program when you send mail to
listserv@grot.starconn.com. See below for a list of some of the commands.

Listserv commands
=================

The listserv program ignores the Subject: line of mail messages. It only
interprets commands in the body of the message.

Here is a summary of the basic commands. Note that the "help" command
will send you more information, including information on commands not
listed below.

** In all cases, you will send the command in the body of a mail **
** message, and address the message to listserv@grot.starconn.com. **

  Unsubscribing from the list
  ---------------------------

If you want to be removed from the list, send the command:

    unsubscribe ultralite-list

  Re-subscribing to the list
  --------------------------

If you want to resubscribe to the list, send the command:

    subscribe ultralite-list firstname lastname

(replace "firstname" and "lastname" with your real name, not your
  e-mail address)

Note that you can change the address at which you receive ultralite-list
mail by sending an "unsubscribe" from the old address and then a
  "subscribe" from the new address.

Finding out who else is on the list (and getting their e-mail addresses)
  ------------------------------------------------------------------------

If you want to get a list of the other people on the ultralite-list,
  send the command:

    recipients ultralite-list

Note that the e-mail addresses you'll receive after sending this command
are in "uucp style" and not "internet style". You should probably convert
them to "internet style" before using them. Generally, you can do that
by using the last two elements of the address (seperated by "!"), and
using them in reverse order seperated by an "@". For example, if one
of the addresses is STARNET!APPLE!EITECH.COM!BRIAN, you would use
BRIAN@EITECH.COM instead. By the way, you can use lower-case characters.

  Retrieving digests of old mail
  ------------------------------

If you want to retrieve digests of mail which has been previously sent
to ultralite-list, you'll need to do two commands: one to get a list of
available digests, and the other to retrieve one or more of the digests.
  The first command is:

    index ultralite-list

Sometime later, you will receive a index of available digests. To
retreive one or more of the digests, send this command:

    get ultralite-list path_to_file

(replace "path_to_file" with the path to the digest you want -- this
will make more sense when you actually see an index)

  Retrieving other archives
  -------------------------

There are some other files available in the archives. Follow the same
instructions as you would to retreive digests of old mail.

Getting help or finding out about other commands
  ------------------------------------------------

There are other options and commands available. To find out about
  those, send the command:

    help

More detailed help may be available for the commands listed in the
help file. To retrieve the details, send the same sort of message
  but send the command:

    help command

(replace "command" with the particular command that you're interest in).

  Retrieving this file
  --------------------

You can get another copy of this file by sending this command:

    info ultralite-list

(but if you need a copy of this file, how will you know how to do that? :-)
