Add melted chocolate. Sift toghether the flour and baking powder and fold them, alternately with the buttermilk, into the batter. Divide between 2 buttered and floured cake pans. Bake at 375 for 35 minutes. cool Split the cakes horizontally. Cover the bottom layers with 2 inches of whipped cream and divide the cherries between them. Cover each half with a top layer and sprinkle with kirsch. Frost top and sides of cake with remaining cream and sprinkle grated chocolate over the top. Let the cakes stand for several hours before cutting.
