     Linda, I've never tried this, but have it in one of my books here...hope
you like it, sounds good over here! :)

1/2 cup shortening            2 cups flour
1 1/2 cups sugar              1 cup buttermilk
2 oz red food coloring        1 tbl cocoa
2 eggs                        1 tsp vanilla
1 tsp salt                    1 tbl vinegar
1 tsp baking soday

Cream sugar, salt, and shortening.  Add cake coloring and eggs. Sift four and
cocoa together 3 times.  Add to sugar mixture with buttermilk and vanilla.
Do not beat again.  Dissolve soda in vinegar.  *FOLD* into batter.  Grease
pans-do NOT flour.  Bake.  Frost with white icing-we like a cream cheese
frosting.

OVEN:     350 degrees
BAKE:     30-35 minutes
PAN:      2, 9-inch cake pans
SERVES:   8
NOTE:  Beautiful and delicious.
