NOTES ON TROUBLESOME CREEK Course Name: Troublesome Creek Golf and Hunt Club Location: Eubanks, Oklahoma Length/Par: 3,313/35 - 3,448/36 - 6,761/71 Designers: Clifford Johnson, Sammy Hendrix, Robert Smith Difficulty: Moderate to Difficult Thanks to: Mark Willett, for his background borrowed from the JNSE rendition of Oakmont Country Club JNSE Design: Lee Ritze It's been a while since I've done one of these, and I feel a little rusty as I wrap this one up. Troublesome Creek has been poking along for about seven months now. At points I thought I'd never finish it. Although probably not as polished as much as a few other courses I did in 1992, I've gotten as big a kick out of playing this course as any I've made. This may be because I made this one with no intention of ever "publishing" it. So I just put the kind of play values into the course that I enjoy most. That meant hills, trees, hills and hills. I've borrowed a background that Mark Willett made for the Oakmont recreation he partered on with Dave Salamon. I had a decent new background for a few months for Troublesome Creek. But then a month or so ago I saw Oakmont on the Accolade BBS and downloaded it. I imported the background from Oakmont into Troublesome, and the look I'd been wanting was just THERE. From that point, I couldn't go back to my original. This background is just one of many things I've borrowed from Mark's work over the past couple years. Probably the greatest fun I've ever had with this hobby is the many hours that Mark and I sat in restaurants in Denver in 1992 talking about JNSE course design. Thank you, Mark. I don't see Troublesome Creek as great golf course design. It just represents fun golf holes that I've discovered as a player over the years. Several of the holes come from memories of playing Yale University Golf Course this spring... probably the most fun I've ever had exploring a new course. Others come from a mixture of public courses I've played in Cincinnati and northeast Texas. I hope that you'll get a kick out of playing this course, and not take it too seriously. This will probably be my last JNSE design, as work has become pretty intense for me in the last several months. But I'm sure that whenever Accolade release their next generation of JN-whatever, I'll be one of the first to plunk down my $50 and see what the new version will let me do to Augusta, St. Andrews... and maybe even Troublesome Creek. I believe my use of this background fits within the restrictions Mark prefers for the borrowing and distribution of his work.
