Fresh from the author at IBM: here come the SYSTEM TUNES for those without a Sound Card... - Clemens ------------------------ start quote SYSTEM TUNES ------------ I as a fan of the OS/2 System Sounds feature included with OS/2 2.1 via MMPM/2 1.1, I wanted to associate sounds to OS/2 on my ThinkPad. I had heard that you could use the OS/2 Tune Editor (part of PM Diary for you long time OS/2 users) in the Productivity Folder to create system sounds if you didn't have a sound card. After failed attempts getting it to work, one of the Boca mutimedia folks told me that the .$$A files created by the tune editor contained multiple tunes in one file. He continued to tell me that the MMPM/2 System Sounds feature could only handle the file if all but one of the tunes in the file were removed. Lo and behold, it worked.....so I have made these tunes (I call them System Tunes) available for others who do not have a sound card, use a laptop, and have decided that the SPKRDD package takes up too much CPU for their use. (Take a look at SPKRDD --- the Speaker driver for OS/2 if you have not looked at it--it allows WAV files to be played over your PC speaker, requiring NO SOUND CARD! So here they are...ENJOY! The SYSTUNES.EXE file unpacks into the following sound files: Alarm Clock Clock.$$A Begin Drag Drag.$$A Closing window (Animated) Close.$$A End Drag Drop.$$A Error Error.$$A Information Info.$$A Lockup Lockup.$$A Opening Window (Animated) Open.$$A Printer Error Printer.$$A Shred Shred.$$A System shutdown Shutdown.$$A System startup Startup.$$A Warning Warning.$$A ***************************************************************************** Instructions These instructions will unpack from the SYSTUNES.EXE file ------------ as well. Advanced Users with OS/2 2.1, MMPM/2 and System Sounds: Unpack SYSTUNES.EXE where the sound files are kept, usually \MMOS2\Sound Bites (or \MMOS2\SOUNDS) on the drive where OS/2 2.1 was installed. Associate tunes to events as you would WAV files in the Sound object. Other Workplace Shell Users: Download SYSTUNES.ZIP (it contains SYSTUNES.EXE) and drag SYSTUNES.EXE into the Sound Bites (or Sounds) folder located in the Multimedia folder on the OS/2 2.1 Desktop. (If you do not see the Sound Bites (or Sounds) folder, make a shadow from the drive folder where you installed MMPM/2. There should be a Sound Bites (or Sounds) folder under MMOS2 in the tree view of the Drive folder.) With the Sound Bites (or Sounds) folder open, double-click on the SYSTUNES.EXE object. A window will open, and the file will automatically unpack into the various tunes. Shred the SYSTUNES.EXE object after you see the new tune objects with the extension .$$A appear in the Sounds folder. Close the Sound Bites (or Sounds) folder. Use the Sound object in the Multimedia folder (or System Setup folder) to associate tunes to events. Command Line Users: Learn Workplace Shell--you should know better! Copy SYSTUNES.EXE to \MMOS2\Sound Bites (or \MMOS2\SOUNDS) subdirectory. Change to that subdirectory, type SYSTUNES, and press enter to unpack tunes. Then erase SYSTUNES.EXE, goto the Workplace Shell and open the Sound object in the Multimedia folder (or System Setup folder) to associate tunes to events. More info on using System Sounds can be found in the books that come with OS/2 2.1. ***************************************************************************** System Requirements: -------------------- 1. OS/2 2.1 with MMPM/2 1.1 installed If you have not done this and you do not have a sound card, just install the Software Motion Video option. This will install the System Sounds feature, and let you play with the software video which also requires no special hardware to see movies (sound card required only to hear audio that accompanies video.) See OS/2 2.1 documentation for more assistance. 2. Tune Editor (part of Personal Productivity option) If you did a full install of OS/2 2.1, you will find this in the Productivity folder located initially in the System Setup folder. If you did a selective install, and did not install the Tune Editor, have your OS/2 2.1 diskettes ready and do the following: Open Selective Install (Icon located in the System Setup folder. Just select System Setup from the Desktop pop-up menu.) Select OK on the first window that pops up (do not change anything there). On the next window that opens, check the box next to Tools and Games, click on the More... button on the same line, then check the box next to Personal Productivity. Select OK (the window will close) and click the Install button at the bottom. Follow the instructions from there. ***************************************************************************** Updates ------- I plan to add tunes in the future as time allows. Edward S.
