CAP2TEXT.COM provides an easy way to copy displayed screens directly to a document on disk, ready for later retrieval by a word processor. It is a memory resident utility for the IBM PC family of computers, allowing 'snap-shots' to be taken during other programs' operation. Screens are copied to ASCII or WordPerfect format file. TESTER.EXE provides a work-out test pattern for Cap2Text. It displays the extended character set, lines and boxes. This display can demonstrate and test Cap2Text's abilities. Type "TESTER" at the DOS prompt, and CAPTURE it. CONFIG.EXE configures the operation of Cap2Text. A menu of the adjustable features is shown, with the current values of each displayed beside it. A help screen will appear for each item being changed. MANUAL.TXT this manual in ASCII text format, displayed by typing "TYPE MANUAL.TXT | MORE" printed by typing "PRINT MANUAL.TXT". INSTALL.EXE installs files and optionally modifies AUTOEXEC.BAT to load Cap2Text into memory at boot-up. ORDER.FRM printable order form (type "print order.frm") ---------------- | INSTALLATION | ---------------- To INSTALL the files, place the distribution diskette into drive A (or B) and type "A(or B):INSTALL" [enter]. Follow the on-screen prompts. Upon completion, CONFIG will be run to show and set the operating features. - - OR - - - You may manually install Cap2Text. 1) Make a directory on the destination drive. MD \CAP2TEXT 2) Copy the files from the distribution diskette to the destination drive and directory. COPY A:*.* C:\CAP2TEXT INSTALL.EXE may be deleted. DEL C:\CAP2TEXT\INSTALL.EXE 3) Edit your AUTOEXEC.BAT file to add the new directory to the PATH statement. If you wish to always load Cap2Text at start-up, add the command line. C:CAP2TEXT 4) Change to the new directory. CD C:\CAP2TEXT 5) Run Config to set the operating features. CONFIG -------------- | Cap2Text | -------------- Load Cap2Text into memory by typing "Cap2Text" at the DOS prompt, or by including the line "Cap2Text.COM" in the AUTOEXEC.BAT file. This may have been done during INSTALL. As with all memory-resident programs, do not load during an application's temporary "exit or shell to DOS" process. Only 3k of system memory will be occupied. Activate Cap2Text by holding down the [Ctrl] key while you press and release the [PRINT SCREEN] key. If you have changed this 'hot-key' using CONFIG, use your new combination. The screen will be read, interpreted to ASCII (or WordPerfect) format, and written to a file named 'IMAGE.DOC' in the current disk's root directory, e.g. C:\IMAGE.DOC. If you are logged on to a diskette, Cap2Text will attempt to write 'IMAGE.DOC' there. A high beep indicates creation of 'IMAGE.DOC' on the disk. A low beep indicates that IMAGE.DOC already exists and the current screen is being appended to that same file. A medium beep indicates that screen capture is complete. If WordPerfect format is chosen, documents will be created with 12 pitch to allow an 80 column screen to fit within a normal 8 1/2 inch page width. Margins are set to 1 inch and 1/2 inch. This can be altered later within the word processor. ASCII format files will have no margins or modifiers. Using WordPerfect output format, the full screen is written as is with line and box drawing characters preserved. Characters displayed on the screen with high intensity will receive the bold attribute. Coloured areas of the screen can be assigned any one of the WordPerfect attributes. Unload Cap2Text by retyping its name at the DOS prompt (not during an application's temporary "exit or shell to DOS" process). Memory-resident programs must be unloaded in the reverse order to which they were loaded. ------------ | CONFIG | ------------ Type "CONFIG" at the DOS prompt if you wish to alter any of Cap2Text's features. If CONFIG successfully finds Cap2Text and all of its configuration 'markers', a menu will appear with the current settings displayed to the right of each item. Failure to start indicates that the DOS PATH should be changed or you must run CONFIG after changing to the directory where the files were installed. An arrow and high-light bar can be moved using the up and down arrow keys. Pick the item to be changed by pressing [enter]. Read the help pop-up text and respond to the prompt displayed there. The new setting will be displayed beside the menu when complete. Changes will come into effect after loading (or removing and re- loading) Cap2Text into memory. Config: Cap2Text's Customizer +----------------------------------------+ | Press [^] [v] and [ENTER] to change | | -------------------------------------- | | File format | ASCII | Attribute for coloured areas (WP only)|->NORMAL | Normal background colour (WP only)| BLACK | Language for spelling checker (WP only)| UK | Hot-key which captures the screen | [Ctrl PRTSC+----------+ | Save and/or Exit | |BOLD | +----------------------------------------+ |ITALIC | +-------------------------------------------+ |OUTLINED | | Screen areas with a coloured background | |NORMAL | | will have one of these attributes applied | |REDLINED | | to that area of the document. | |SHADOWED | | 'REDLINED' text will print with a shaded | |SMALL CAPS| | background on most laser printers. | |STRIKE OUT| +-------------------------------------------+ |UNDERLINED| |DBL UNDRLN| +----------+ Use [^] [v] press [ENTER] This screen was capture in pure ASCII mode. In the example above, the attribute to be applied to coloured areas of the screen is chosen from a pick list by using the up and down arrows, and pressing [ENTER]. The 'Save and/or Exit' option allows you to Save the current settings, Quit without saving, or press any other key to resume at the menu. Config directly modifies Cap2Text.COM with the new settings - no need for command line arguments or a configuration file. -------------------- | TROUBLE SHOOTING | -------------------- The PC must be in text mode (modes 2, 3 or 7) for Cap2Text to load or activate. WordPerfect provides a screen capture utility called "GRAB" for graphics modes. Some memory resident programs change interrupt vectors and execute only their own alternate interrupt handlers. Cap2Text will execute any previously loaded routine(s) first, then itself. Cap2Text should be loaded after network or other memory-resident programs. Hot-keys are combinations of keys having altered meanings. Many BIOSes do not support all possible key combinations. Further still, applications may re-define key combinations at will and reset them upon exit. Cap2Text and CONFIG directly examine the Shift, Control and Alt keys and the key's scan code to provide combinations not conventionally available. The Ctrl-PrintScreen combination (a DOS function) may cause problems if pressed while Cap2Text is not in memory. An alternate may be desirable. Use CONFIG to change this feature. The output format may be changed to ASCII. Cap2Text will translate the special characters, used for line and box drawing, to typewriter characters which can be sent directly to a printer. If you choose Extended ASCII output format, special characters will remain as seen on the screen. However, many printers will not print these characters properly, and some applications cannot directly import them as seen. ----------------------- | SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS | ----------------------- Any IBM PC or compatible with DOS 2.0 or above. Approximately 3 kbytes of memory is consumed by Cap2Text. Monitors must be in text mode during program load and screen Cap2Text. MDA, HERCULES, CGA, EGA and VGA screens may be used. --------------------- | LICENSE AGREEMENT | --------------------- This DEMONSTRATION VERSION may be freely copied and distributed for trial purposes in hope that if found satisfactory, the production version will be purchased.
