Windows(TM) and Windows NT(TM) are trademarks of Microsoft(R) Corporation. UPJOY requires Microsoft Windows 3.1 and a joystick or gamepad. You may evaluate UPJOY for 30 days, after which you MUST register your copy if you continue to use it. When we receive your $30 payment, we will mail or email you an UNLOCKING CODE. The UNLOCKING CODE is used to transform your copy of UPJOY into a registered version by disabling any registration reminder messages that UPJOY displays once in a while. All copies of UPJOY version 1.0 use the same UNLOCKING CODE, so you may not disclose the code to other people. Future UPJOY releases up to, and including UPJOY version 2.0 will use the same UNLOCKING CODE, meaning that when you get UPJOY version 1.5 for instance, through which ever channel, you're still registered. In other words, registering entitles you to FREE future versions of UPJOY. The UPJOY Industrial Joystick Driver is marketed as shareware to cut overhead costs. There is hence no point in BIGGUN International mailing you a disk or a manual -- doing so would cost more than marketing UPJOY through retail channels. Once you've registered, you're also entitled to free technical support via mail and by contacting us on CompuServe(R). You are encouraged to evaluate UPJOY extensively before registering it, then you can send UPJOY-related questions (if any) with your registration to save time. In the registration form, you should check your disk preference anyway, in case we need to mail you a specific update in the future. Five VITAL files that make up the UPJOY product and without which UPJOY may NOT be distributed: UPJOY DR_ (the UPJOY.DRV driver, in compressed format) UPJOY HL_ (the UPJOY.HLP online help, in compressed format) UPJOYREG TXT (this file) SETUPJOY CP_ (the SETUPJOY.CPL applet, in compressed format) JINSTALL EXE (the version-aware installation program) For the JINSTALL.EXE installation program to work properly; the to-be-installed files MUST be in compressed format, i.e., ending with a '_'. Disk vendors, shareware game authors, end users (players), BBSs, etc., are encouraged to distribute the UPJOY Industrial Joystick Driver. Retail game publishers may also ship UPJOY with their games provided that the recipient isn't misled that UPJOY is free, because it is NOT. Remember that UPJOY is a stand-alone product and not part of a specific game, even though it may be distributed with games. For example, if you 'got' UPJOY with an UPJOY Driven shareware game, you must register the game separately. Similarly, if you bought an UPJOY Driven retail game, you still have to pay BIGGUN International if you use UPJOY. However, you only have to register UPJOY once, because a single registered copy of UPJOY works for all UPJOY Driven games. If you wish to distribute UPJOY with your UPJOY Driven shareware games via BBSs, you should compress the Five Vital UPJOY files with your game files and name the result the same as your game, for example, SPACEWAR.ZIP. Obviously you won't win much space by ZIPping the three already-compressed UPJOY files, but the idea is to combine the files for easy distribution. If you're distributing your games (retail, free or shareware games) on disk, you should ship UPJOY in its Five File Format for easier installation, except if space is limited. You need not be a registered UPJOY user to distribute UPJOY. Fact: The absence of a joystick driver standard for DOS was the cause of a decade of joystick incompatibilities and suffering amongst gamers and game developers. The philosophy behind device drivers is simple, namely to make application programs (and games) hardware independent. A device driver is, in fact, a soft interface between a program and a peripheral, e.g., a mouse needs a mouse driver to work with a drawing package. The whole idea of Windows and Windows NT is to make programs hardware independent via device drivers for mice, monitors, keyboards, printers, sound cards, etc. As more and more fast computers with fast graphics accelerator cards, lots of RAM and sound cards ship, Windows is becoming a potential paradise for games. But Windows doesn't ship with a joystick driver and with the proposed Windows Multimedia JoystickS DriverS 'StandardS' as well as the 'free lunch' IBMJOY.DRV the game industry is in for another decade of suffering. The solution is simple, support UPJOY. An UPJOY Driven game doesn't even ask a gamer whether he or she wants to play with a joystick -- it all happens transparently. Because UPJOY may be distributed with retail, shareware and free games and as a stand-alone product, you're likely to run into many copies of UPJOY. The UPJOY installation program (JINSTALL.EXE) is version-aware, making it easy for you to install newer versions of UPJOY as they become available. Game authors/publishers distributing their games with UPJOY compatibility are encouraged to add the following notice when advertising their games as well as in their documentation: * UPJOY Driven(TM) *, UPJOY(TM) and UPJOY Driven(TM) are trademarks of BIGGUN International. Scan the [Game Design] section of GAMERS forum on CompuServe for the latest on UPJOY. We, at BIGGUN International, are currently working on UPJOY for Windows NT. We have a dream: We see a time when the word 'Calibrate' won't exist. # # #
