Personal Ancestral File 2.3 Problems reported by phone and testing as of April 13, 1994 One of the first problems we have found is that the manual and\or readme file does not reflect the 2.3 steps, screens, and menus especially in installing and configuring. Install Hard Drive - Run-time error when PAF tries to add C:\PAF to the PATH statement in the AUTOEXEC.BAT - this is not consistent on all computers - Sometimes PAF incorrectly adds the C:\PAF to the PATH statement or does not format the PATH statement correctly - seems to depend on how the PATH statement is formatted Dual floppy - Previous 5 1/4 working diskettes need to be formatted before installing release 2.3. - Backup function and GIE do not work on dual floppy only systems. Configuration - Various problems with the generic Epson printer driver. A new printer list was provided that has an Epson driver for single sheet and an Epson driver for continuous paper plus some other printers not on the list before. - The following numbers or number combinations cause the error message "Configuration file not found..." and/or other problems: 26 and 13 with 10. - On last screen of configure (screen that mentions SET PAFCONF=) if you press F2 to quit the message "Are you sure? Y/N" appears. If you press Y or N the program quits. If "N" is pressed have the program return to the configuration screen that allows you to set the drives. Dual floppy - Does not update 5 1/4 working disks two and three with the PAFCONF.DAT file. - There isn't enough room on the help disk for the GIE help and FR help indexes. Family Records program - Unable to change name case by just retyping it. You have to clear out the field, move the cursor out of the field, move the cursor back in the field, retype the name, and then press enter. - If a family that has parents is displayed in the pedigree search screen and then a family with one or both parents missing is called up by MRIN, the screen displays the parent(s) of the previous family. - If CTRL+Y or CTRL+Backspace are used to delete every line of notes in the notes screen, then any notes that are immediately added after that will not be saved when F1 is pressed to save the notes. You have to press F1 after deleting the notes and then new note text can be entered. - In the notes screen there are several functions available by pressing CTRL+a letter or ALT+a letter. However, if the CTRL and ALT keys are used with letters that are not supposed to produce any results, half lines will be deleted and marked and whatever. Only those functions that are supposed to be available in notes screen should be available. - When attempting to run check data options run time errors are occuring when free conventional memory is between 163K and 185K. - Some XTs and other computers must disable the mouse function with the -m switch or the computer will lock up when trying to run FR or GIE. This appears to be some incompatibility with earlier versions of DOS or computers and the way PAF initializes the mouse. The new DOS requirement should resolve this problem. - "S" for sealing to spouse does not print after the women's records on a pedigree chart and it does for the men's records. - PAF 2.3 checks 29 Feb against the year to make sure that the year entered is a valid leap year. If it isn't, no message is displayed to tell the user why the date isn't accepted. - This problem only occurs if the mouse is active. Enter the Pedigree Search screen. Choose option 2 for RIN browse. Press F for father's record. Press H to search for a woman's record. When the woman's record is displayed the father that was showing will now show as the woman's spouse along with another man's record as the second spouse. Neither is the woman's spouse. The same problem will occur following the same steps, but selecting a mother and then searching for a man's record. This is only a display problem but it is very confusing to the user. - "Use form feeds when printing?" does not send form feeds after blank charts. Form feeds need to be added to the blank forms or the option in CONFIG needs to affect the blank forms also. The latter option is preferred. - Print to screen does not pause if page has less than 24 lines. - When rebuilding alpha browse file the message "Press Ctrl-C to quit" is displayed over the top of data if the rebuild was cancelled and then restarted . - In range print of FGRs if the last MRIN in the range to print is also the last MRIN in the database the last FGR will not print. Putting a comma after the last MRIN in the range seems to be the work-around. - If the LDS ordinances are turned off and the paper size is set to ask (?), then the menu asking which paper size you want still has four options (i.e. letter, legal, letter w/o LDS ord., and legal w/o LDS ord.). The last two options do not print anything with the LDS ordinances turned off. The first two options print the report w/o the LDS ordinances because the ordinances are turned off. The ask paper size menu should be modified to only show two options when the LDS ords. are turned off. - Data input error. Enter any birth date. Arrow down (must be arrow for this to occur) to death date. Hit F9 to ditto date. If you keep hitting F9 it puts garbage into the second or third level of death place. Also, a problem in second level of place and in temple codes. - When printing an ahnentafel chart w/o enough memory the message "not enough memory to print pedigree chart" appears. - Wildcard does not work in the Id field because it is a literal field stored in INDIV2.DAT and not a name from NAME2.DAT. - If you choose "Check Data" from the backup reminder screen, then after the check choose "Backup Data", then without a disk in the backup drive specified press F1 to make the backup, BROTHERNEPHEW appears at the bottom of the screen instead of ABORT or RETRY. - Ditto from previous entry while toggling between two databases works to ditto dates, but because the name codes are being dittoed when you ditto names or places between the databases you will get the names or places that are assigned to the name codes being dittoed. - Searches or Focuses using just the wildcard (*) alone finds everyone in the database and not just those with something in the field where the wildcard was used. - Both parents of a family cannot be removed using the Pedigree Search screen. - Printer timeout errors are still occuring. Most can be corrected by setting the Printer Timeout Value to a value higher than 0 or by setting it to 0 with the printer port number to 0. Bad cables have also been found to be the problem even if other programs are printing okay. - Relationship calculator does not work correctly in instances of in-laws. - Starting the programs with the -r switch to specify b: for the drive for program disk still checks a:. - Relationship calculator no longer shows more than one relationship. This is not a bug, but people seem to want this changed back to show multiple relationships. - In alpha browse you cannot jump to names that start with X because X is used to exit the alpha browse. However, X is displayed as a letter you can jump to and as the option to eXit. Provide an option to jump to X. Perhaps the Jump function in "Add part of GEDCOM file could be used. - In the large Pedigree Search screen you cannot select a person with the mouse and click on the Large option to start the Large pedigree from the person you wanted to select. - After printing a cascading pedigree chart or a pedigree chart if you change to a new database using temporary configuration and then print another cascading pedigree chart the message "Bad record number xxxx...." appears and then on the top of the pedigree that is printing the message "Press (%s) to cancel..." will print. Note that the bad record number message may not appear. - If the Family Records program is run with a parameter of the location of a database (other than the current subdirectory) and if F3 is pressed in Pedigree Search the program tries to toggle to a database in the current directory. If data exists in the current directory the program toggles to it, otherwise the message "No such file or directory file: indiv2.dat. Press enter." appears. Please note that the -d switch was not used in this case. - When using the -d switch to toggle between two databases if in the Large Pedigree Search screen you press F3 to switch the databases the generation numbers do not change to reflect the database you are now in. For example, if in the first database you move past the first five generations and then toggle the titles that indicate the generations (i.e. 6th 7th 8th 9th 10th) will not change to show that you are now looking at generations one through five of the second database. - When toggling between databases in the Large Pedigree Search screen for the first time, if the database you are switching to has a RIN 1 that is not in MRIN 1 then that person shows up married to the spouse in MRIN 1. If you then press "X" to exit to the main Ped. Search screen RIN 1 shows with the spouse and the children of MRIN 1 and as the child of the parents of the other spouse of MRIN 1. - If SHARE.EXE is active on the computer and you try to run Family Records in a second session from Windows the error "General Failure while reading drive C" occurs. Genealogical Information Exchange - On the GEDCOM and submission "Submitter Information" screens four address lines are displayed. The fourth line should be "Phone Number" so that people don't type their phone number on the third line and have it become part of the address in the GEDCOM file. - The word 'Of' is removed from the beginning of the locality field when a temple submission is created. - If while using PAF 2.2 temple submission option the statements regarding whether the temple or the patron will provide proxies for ordinances were answered with "N", PAF 2.3 picks up this information and asks for which ordinances the patron will provide proxies. Deleting the GIEDEF.DAT file from the data directory corrects this problem. - 'Abt.' is being added to complete christening dates during temple names submission. - "Temple Names Submission Report" is not correctly reflecting the number of names qualified for temple ordinances. - If focus results were saved and then some of the individuals in those results deleted and if those focus results are used to create a GEDCOM file, the "Selection Results" screen will display the total number of records that were in the focus results. The GEDCOM file can still be created successfully. - When GIE creates a GEDCOM file the sealing to parent information is recorded as part of the marriage record and when a GEDCOM file is added the sealing to parent information is taken from the marriage record. Some genealogical programs such as Family Origins are following the proposed standard where the sealing to parent information is recorded in the individual record. If a GEDCOM file created from Family Origins is added to PAF data using GIE then the sealing to parent information ends up in the listing file. - The help screen at the "Create GEDCOM" menu mentions a ninth option to include an individual with a full tree. This option does not exist. - When including a range of families for a GEDCOM file the word print is used instead of include or something to indicate that the range of families will be included in the GEDCOM file. - Records with "..." as a name are being qualified for temple work. Do not qualify these names. Research Data Filer - Sort command locks up computer. - The Ditto function doesn't work. Family Records Check (FRCHK) - FRCHK runs very slowly when checking name file, children relationships, and marriage relationships in a multitasking environment such as Windows. Pressing the space bar during these checks speeds up the process. - If FRCHK finds the last note record to be valid (within range), but not linked to any note or individual record (not deleted), then it reports "note record through 1 is not linked to any note chain. The program is caught in a loop and must be rebooted or Ctrl-Break pressed. PAF Communications (PAFCOM) - Improper instructions are displayed for running program. Display says "C:PAFPAFCOM" instead of "C:\PAF\PAFCOM".
