A Brief Overview of the National Kidney Cancer Association The National Kidney Cancer Association actively works to increase the survival of kidney cancer patients and improve their care. The Association (1) provides information to patients and physicians, (2) sponsors research on kidney cancer, and (3) acts as an advocate on behalf of patients. The NKCA publishes WE HAVE KIDNEY CANCER, a 56-page booklet for patients and their families. A free copy of this booklet may be obtained by calling the NKCA at 708-332-1051 or by writing to the NKCA at 1234 Sherman Avenue, Evanston, IL 60202. The FAX number is 708-328-4425. The Association also publishes KIDNEY CANCER NEWS, a quarterly newsletter for patients and physicians. To obtain a free subscription, contact the Association. Other information is also available through the Association. The Association also operates a free computer bulletin board for patients, physicians, and others with an interest in kidney cancer. This free BBS can be accessed at 708-332-1052 (2400 BAUD, 8 DATA BITS, 1 STOP BIT, NO PARITY, FULL DUPLEX, NO ECHO, ANSI terminal compatible). Free E-mail, information on kidney cancer and information on the NKCA are available 24 hours per day. The Association holds regular meetings of patients, families and physicians to discuss current treatments and issues in kidney cancer. These meetings are held by local chapters in New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, and other major cities. Through these support group activities, patients can meet other patients and learn about their disease. The Association believes that patients who are well informed about their disease are more likely to make good decisions regarding treatment, and are more likely to survive their disease. The Association operates a kidney cancer research fund which is supported by patients and their families. Income from the fund is used to sponsor research on kidney cancer. The Association's Medical Advisory Board is composed of leading physician/researchers in the field of kidney cancer and the Association's research program is directed by this board. The Association represents patients with government and other organizations. For example, the Association has testified before the FDA on new drugs for treating kidney cancer. It also assists patients in obtaining insurance company reimbursements for new, state-of-the-art therapies. It will also help patients fight employment discrimination. Incorporated in 1990 as a State of Illinois non-profit corporation, the Association has been recognized by the U.S. Internal Revenue Service as a tax- exempt charitable organization, 501(c)(3). Donations made to the Association qualify as tax deductible, charitable contributions. If you have questions about kidney cancer, call the Association. Inquiries are always welcome. If you would like to participate in Association activities such as local chapter meetings, please call or write to the Association.
