Note: They say see page 5 for basic stitches but don't show a shell there. I'd guess it's your typical 5 or 6 dc's in 1 sp, but peering closely at the picture I can kinda make out it's just 3 (I *think*!!!) But maybe that's 1 split in 2 by the next row. See what fits... I haven't made this yet! Half Motif (make 2 turquoise) Row 1: ch 5, slst in 1st ch to form ring, ch 3, 9 dc in ring, turn (10 dc). Row 2: Ch 9, sc in next st, {ch 9, skip next st, sc in next st} across, turn (5 sc, 5 ch-9 lps). Row 3: Slst in 1st st, slst in next ch, ch 1, sc in same ch and next ch tog, {sc in each of next 2 chs, 3 sc in next ch, sc in each of next 2 chs, sc next 2 chs tog}, *skip next st, sc next 2 ch's tog; repeat between {}; repeat from * across leaving last st unworked, turn (45 sc). Row 5: Ch 3, sc in next st, {ch 3 skip next st, sc in next st} across, turn (16 sc, 16 ch-3 sps). Row 8: Wroking in sts and in ends of rows, ch 3, skip row 7, sc in next row, ch 3, skip next 2 rows, sc in next st, ch 3, skip next 2 sts, sc in next st, ch 3, skip next st, sc in top of next dc row, ch 3, sc in ring, ch 3, sc in top of next dc row, ch 3, skip next st, sc in next st, ch 3, skip next 2 sts, sc in next st, ch 3, sip next 2 rows, sc in next row, ch 3, slst in top of row 7, fasten off (10 ch 3 sps, 9 sc). (WHEW!!!) Joining Note: Join half motifs an square motifs in sequence according to diagram (I'll give it a shot later on, here're the written directions first.) Strip: To join first 2 motifs, join with sc in any corner ch sp, ch 1, sc in corner ch sp on second motif, {ch 1, sc in next ch sp on first motif, ch 1, sc in next ch sp on second motif} 7 times, fasten off. (I won't go into the boring details, it just says basically make 8 strips of 4, and obviously the corner things, though they don't say, have to go on the end spots of 2 strips. Though actually, what I'd do is make 1 big back square (you'll see the diagram, it'll make sense) of 16 squares, 4x4, and then make the front panels. That way you can join diagonally instead of having all those loose ends!) Oh HECK. I hope you don't mind, but let's just skip to the diagram. It's really obvious from that! Key: Y = yellow P = peach B = blue L = lt. pink D = dk. pink M = lime T = turquoise G = green ww ww ww ww w-- shoulder seams -- -- -- -- -- -- /T|Y :P |B |D |T :P |T\ :-- leave open -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- |P |B *Y |M |G |L *G |Y | *-- sew only 1/2 way up -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- |G |D |G |D |T |Y |M |D | -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- |L |T |L |T |P |B |L |B | -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- When you've got it sewn into 1 big floppy thing with slits for the armholes, sew the TOPS of the motifs on each side of the armholes together to form the shoulder seams. Edging: Front (with yellow) Rnd 1: Working around entire outer edge, join yellow with sc in firts st past bottom corner ch sp on right front, sc in each st, 2 sc in each sch sp and 3 sc over each joining row around with 3 sc in each bottom corner ch sp, join with slst in first sc. Rnd 2: Ch 1, sc in each st around with 2 sc in each center corner st, join. Rnd 3: Ch 1, sc in each st around with 2 sc in 2nd st of each corner 2-sc group, join. Rnd 4: Ch 1, sc in each of first 3 sts; for bottonhole, ch 3, skp next 3 sts; {sc in next 8 sts, work buttonhole} 7 times, sc in each st around with 2 sc in 2nd st of each corner 2-sc group, join (8 buttonholes... no kidding ). Armhole (with lime) Rnd 1: Working around 1 armhole opening, join lime with sc in first ch sp past joining at underarm, sc in same sp, sc in each st, 2 sc in each ch sp and 3 sc over each joining row around, join with slst in 1st sc. Rnd 2: Ch 1, sc in each st around, join, fasten off. Repeat in other armhole. (Gee whilikers, really? Sorry...) Sew buttons to left front on Front Opening Edging opposite buttonholes. (I won't even COMMENT... ) ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Anyway, that's it! It's kinda boxy, it'd look better with jeans (esp in these colors) than a skirt. I like the motifs though, I might just use that part and make an afghan, maybe with worsted weight, changing colors within the motifs, or all off-white even!
