MUST HAVE INTERNET RESOURCES There are five must-have Internet resources. Two, the Yanoff and December lists, are hard copy summaries of Internet resources. They are invaluable desktop additions for any user, especially newcomers. The other three, HYTELNET, HYPLUS, and INFOPOP are DOS programs providing an incredible amount of information. Although there is much duplication, each of the resources has value not offered in the others. HARD COPY RESOURCES DECEMBER LIST - Information Sources, compiled by John December, is a list of pointers to information describing the Internet, computer networks, and issues related to computer-mediated communications. The list is frequently updated and is available via anonymous FTP from ftp.rpi.edu in the directory pub/communications in file internet-cmc. YANOFF LIST - The Internet Services list, affectionately known as the Yanoff list, is a concise listing of Telnet and FTP accessible Internet resources. The list if frequently updated and is available via anonymous FTP from csd4.csd.uwm.edu in the directory pub in file inet.services.txt. PROGRAM RESOURCES HYTELNET - This program is designed to assist you in reaching all of the Internet accessible libraries, Freenets, CWISs, Library BBSs, and other information sites reachable by Telnet. There are several versions of HYTELNET which are available including versions for the IBM compatible personal computer, the MACintosh, and DEC computers using the VMS operating system. Information on over four hundred Telnetable sites is provided by the PC version. The PC version is a TSR program and is available from its creator Peter Scott. FTP to access.usask.ca. The program is in directory pub/hytelnet/pc as hytelnNN.zip where NN is the version number. The program is in ZIP format and requires PKUNZIP, which is available at the same site, to uncompress. INFOPOP - There are both TSR and non-TSR versions of InfoPop. Both versions use hypertext techniques which makes navigation through the maze of information quite easy. An outstanding feature of INFOPOP is the ability to search on a key word. InfoPop is a extensive guide to using the Internet and a variety of other online information systems. While HYTELNET is concerned with only Telnet accessible sites INFO give information on many type of online information including background material. HYPLUS - This guide provides background on the purpose and services of the Internet, gives examples of types of library systems and companion resources, identifies directories and other sources for locating currently available systems, and relates strategies used by experienced searchers to make the most of exploring new resources. Like HYPLUS it is hypertexted and is essentially a road map to the library related sources on the Internet. TERMS HYPERTEXT - A hypertext program is one which allow the non-sequential access to a document. Key words, or phrases, in the text will be highlighted. Moving the highlighting to the desired key, usually with the cursor movement keys, and pressing return will bring up another screen with the desired information. Pressing the Esc key will return to the previous entry. TSR - A terminate and stay resident (TSR) program is one the is executed once and remains hidden in memory. It may be reactivated by pressing the "hot key" combination suspending the program that was running. When the functions of the TSR program are finished, usually by pressing the Esc key, the status of the programs are reversed with the TSR going back to sleep and the original program running. .
