At the beginning of the season the notebook would have three blank statistical sheets in it. As the season progresses the first page will contain the accumulated totals of all the games played and is called the 'Season Statistics'. The second page will contain accumulated totals of all the league (conference) games and is called the 'League Statistics'. The third page will contain accumulated totals of all the non-league (non- conference) games and is called the 'Non-League Statistics'. After each game is played you will add another page to NBS and enter the game statistics on this new page. As each statistic is entered or changed, the 'Season Statistic' page is automatically updated along with the appropriate 'League/Non-League' page. Also, with any entry the totals/averages/percentages on the new stat sheet along with the total sheets are automatically updated. Adding a new page is as simple as typing the letter 'A', when at the main menu, and entering the opponents name and typing the letter L or N to indicate the game was a League or Non-league game. Each new page will already contain the players names making it only necessary to enter the stats. As the season progresses any of the statistical pages can be viewed by turning the pages in the notebook. This is done by pressing either the 'PgUp' key or the 'PgDn' key. You can also go directly to any page if you wish. (This will be explained later). You can also print the stats for any game, total, player or various other options. There is also a bar graph option which allows you to graphically see the progress of your team or players. The advantage of NBS over the notebook on your shelf is that you can change any statistic, add or delete players or modify any of the other data at any time and NBS will automatically update any total/percentages/averages or related information. The following notes will make the instructions easier to follow: Combined key commands: Hyphenated commands (Alt-G) are used by holding down the fist key and then tapping the second key. Multiple key commands separated by commas (Space,Return) are used by tapping the first key and then tapping the second key. Parentheses are used for comments and explanations. Boldface is used for characters or words that appear on the screen. "Keyboard in" means type on the keyboard. 1 Occasionally, periods will be left off of the end of sentences. This is done on purpose so that the period will not be used as part of the command. When you are working in the Baseball Stat Sheet, there may be three highlighted areas, one which is always on the name column and the others which are moveable. The file "DEMO" used in this documentation is included on the NOBLE BASEBALL STATISTICS (NBS) disk. When using the sample files, be careful not to save them when exiting or loading new files, as this may change the data. 1-2 Installing the program Make a working copy of the master disk. Store the original disk in a safe place and use the copy as your program disk. One Disk Drive System: 1. Boot DOS or copy NBS.EXE & DEMO.BBS onto a DOS Disk (see your DOS manual) and 2. Load the program by typing NBS and pressing return. 3. Leave the program disk in drive A: and use it as a data disk also. 4. Or, remove the program disk and place a formatted data disk in drive A: Two Disk Drive System: 1. Boot DOS or copy NBS.EXE & GAME.BBS onto a DOS Disk (see your DOS manual) and 2. Place the program disk in drive A: and a formatted data disk in drive B: 3. Change to drive B: (type B: and press return) 4. Load the program by typing A:NBS and press return 5. Or, use step 3 in One Disk Drive System Hard drive system: 1. Create a subdirectory for NBS data (see your DOS manual). 2. Copy NBS.EXE & DEMO.BBS to the subdirectory or copy NBS.EXE to where application programs reside and copy DEMO.BBS to the NBS data subdirectory and 3. Load the program while in the data subdirectory. 2 GENERAL INFORMATION/COMMAND SUMMARY 2-1 Command Summary The following commands may be displayed with the use of the F1 help key. Pressing 'return' will move to the next box, or the Up arrow and Down arrow keys may be used to move from box to box. The 'Esc' key will return you to the *** Main Menu ***. If there is an error in a box, return to the box and use the backspace key to delete the mistake and retype the entry. Team Name: Enter the Home Team name (up to 30 characters). Season: Enter season description (up to 29 characters). Example: 1987-1988 Women's Baseball ERA: This is the number of innings used to calculate the Earned Run Average. 6 Printer Setup - Statistical sheets Set up string: Many printers allow special print options, such as condensed or sideways printing, through the use of escape sequence set up strings. This field allows one to specify the set up strings which will be sent to your printer prior to printing any stat sheet. The escape sequence usually consists of an escape character followed by additional characters. The escape character would be entered an \027 and an example of a character 4 would be \004. The following shows a couple examples of set up strings: Most Dot Matrix printers in condense mode \027B\003 HP LaserJet in condense, sideways & 8 lines/inch mode \027E\027&l1ol8D\027&k2S Reset string: If the printer is sent a set up string it is usually appropriate to send a reset command after the printing has finished. This field allows one to specify a reset escape sequence if it is needed. Examples of such commands would be: Most Dot Matrix printers \027B\001 HP LaserJet \027E Maximum number of columns: This field specifies the maximum number of characters per line that your printer is capable of printing. The default value is 80 and may be changed for any printer width or in conjunction with any condense printing. When changing this value be sure to allow room for left and right margins. Examples would be: Most Dot Matrix printer in condense mode on 8 1/2 inch wide paper 116 HP LaserJet in condense mode on 11 inch wide paper 166 Maximum number of rows: This field specifies the maximum number of rows (lines) than can be printed on a page. If you change this value be sure to allow for top and bottom margins. Examples would be: Most Dot Matrix printers at 6 lines/inch on 11 inch paper 60 HP LaserJet at 8 lines/inch on 8 1/2 inch paper 64 Printer Setup - Bar graph Set up String: In some cases, usually on networks, it may be necessary to send an escape command to the printer which will load the standard IBM graphic character fonts. This field allows one to enter such a command if it is needed. If your printer already has the correct fonts, leave this field blank. This option is usually not needed for stand alone printers attached to single computers. Consult your printer of network manuals for any escape codes you might need. 7 Reset String: This option is used to reset the printer if you sent it a bar graph setup string as described above. THE STAT SHEET 3-3 (G)et configuration The (G)et option allows a configuration to be copied from another file into the current file. This would be used if records were being kept for several teams (home team name would have to be changed) or when starting a new season (change Season). This option eliminates the need to retype the setup strings. 8 THE STAT SHEET 3-4 (V)iew/edit stat sheet To view or edit a stat sheet, type V while in the *** Main Menu *** and the Stat Sheet will appear. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- ÚÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄ¿ ³ Command or data: _ Season Statistics ³ ³ Filename: Record 0- 0- 0 ³ ³ ³ ³ |------------------------------------------- OFFENSE S³ ³ Name GP OB TB AB R H RBI 2B 3B³ ³ ³ ³ ÛÛÛÛÛÛÛÛÛÛÛÛÛÛÛÛÛÛÛÛÛ ³ ³ Other ³ ³ ³ ³ TOTAL: ³ ³ OPPONENTS: ³ ÀÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÙ ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- The column heading Name will be highlighted and there will be a highlighted bar directly under the Name column heading. If a column heading other than Name is highlighted, use the cursor movement keys to highlight Name and to position the row indicator bar just below Name. F1=Help (in the upper right hand corner of the screen) is to remind you that by pressing F1, you can see the help screen. THE STAT SHEET 3-5 Adding Names Start by entering your team's players names. The best format is Last Name, First Name as this will correctly display the players initials in the bar graph option. Keyboard in the name and press return (or the down arrow). If a name is entered that needs to be changed, move the highlighted bar back to that name and retype that name and press enter. A message will be displayed below the command line: Replace 'xxxxxxx ' with 'xxxxxxxxxxx ' confirm (y or n) press y to confirm the replacement of the name. If a name is entered which should be removed, highlight the name and press the Del key. The message Delete player: xxxxxxx, confirm (y or n) will be displayed below the command line. Press y to confirm and the message: Add xxxxxxx's statistics to 'Other', confirm (y or n) will be displayed below the command line. Answer n to remove a player that was entered by mistake. The y response is used when removing players who have played in games and 9 their names are to be removed from the roster but their stats are retained. When a player is removed and their stats are to be retained (added to 'Other') the players stats are added to any stats which may already be in the 'Other' row. If a name needs to be inserted, place the cursor in the name column where you want the name inserted. Press the Ins key. This will open a row for a new name. THE STAT SHEET 3-6 (I).D. field The (I).D. field is a column which can be added on the left side of the players name. The choices in this option are Option 0 No I.D. field 1 1-5 characters 2 1-11 characters Once an I.D. field is selected it cannot be changed or removed! THE STAT SHEET 3-7 (S)ave The (S)ave option in the *** Main Menu *** is used to save the current stat sheet to a disk file. The first time a Stat sheet is saved, there will be a prompt for a name Stat sheet name: _ Use DOS filename specifications for the path and filename. Improper filenames will return an error report. DO NOT use an extension on the filename. The program adds the extension .BBS to the latest saved Stat sheet and the extension .BAK to the previously saved Stat sheet. After a Stat sheet has been saved once, the program "remembers" the filename. When saving a Stat sheet that has already been named, the program will offer the filename when choosing the (S)ave option from the *** Main Menu ***. To save with that filename, press return. A safety prompt will appear File already exists, overwrite (y or n) _ A answer y to save over the old file (n will return you to the *** Main Menu *** and the file will NOT have been saved). If you wish to change the filename, choose (S)ave and edit the filename by using the back space key. When the Stat Sheet is saved (except for the first time), the message Making backup file: .BAK 1 file(s) copied 10 will appear and you will return to the *** Main Menu *** If there is an error (such as a power failure) when saving the file and you are not returned to the *** Main Menu *** you should use the DOS command REN to rename the .BAK to .BBS. This will allow you to salvage the data from the previous save. DO NOT try to save again as this may cause the good .BAK file to be overwritten. After the file is renamed you can (R)etrieve the file or the file and save the one you wish to keep. Be sure to check them both out carefully before deciding which one to keep. THE STAT SHEET 3-8 c(L)ear Choose c(L)ear to clear the current statistical sheet and start a new stat sheet file. You will be offered the (S)ave option and be returned to the *** Main Menu *** THE STAT SHEET 3-9 (R)etrieve The (R)etrieve option is used to load any files that were previously saved with the (S)ave option. If there is an active stat sheet, you will be offered the option to save it. When selecting the (R)etrieve options, there will be a prompt for a stat sheet name and a list of stat sheets on the current disk drive will be offered. An Example would be: -------------------------------------------------------------------------- ÚÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄ¿ ³sheet name: _ ³ ³ ³ ³Listing of stat sheets ³ ³ ³ ³ FILE1 FILE2 FILE3 DEMO ³ ³ ³ ÀÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÙ -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Type the filename in upper or lower case and press return. Enter the statistics for each Home Team player by highlighting the players name (use the up or down arrow key) and then highlighting the proper column (use the left or right arrow key) Note: Only enter stats that are significant. Do not enter a stat of 0 (zero) except where it would have some true meaning. Blank fields are assumed to be zero. The 'Other' row can be used to enter stats for any player not on the roster or for entering stats which are not to be assinged to a particular player. Also see the paragraph about removing names under section 3.5, adding names. Any player who played as an offensive player should have a 1 (one) entered in the column labeled OFNS/GP (offensive games played). Likewise, any player who played defense should have a 1 (one) entered in the column labeled DEFS/GP (defensive games played). It is important that the players who played are marked (with the 1) in the appropriate column because unmarked players will not appear on the printouts of the individual game stat sheets. Enter the total statistics for the opponents in the OPPONENTS row. The Home key: will move the cursor back to the left most column. The End Key: will move the cussor to the right most column. 13 Key combinations Ctrl- -> will move the cursor one screen to the right Ctrl-<- or one screen to the left. TAB and SHIFT-TAB: will move the cursor one major heading to the right or left. If any entry needs to be changed just highlight the field, enter the correct data and press 'return'. Some of the columns are 'calculated columns' and the user cannot enter data in them. The error message: Error, calculated/fixed field - can not be changed.
