----------------------------------------------------------------- STACKER NOTE STACKER NOTE PASSWORD PROTECTED STACKER DRIVES & QEMM (Applies to Stacker version 3.1 & 4.0) STAC FAX 4101 (3/94) ----------------------------------------------------------------- BACKGROUND Stacker password protected drives are fully compatible with the QEMM users who employ the DOSDATA.SYS function of QEMM. However, at startup QEMM's DOSDATA.SYS performs a mini-reboot and temporarily disables your monitor. You cannot see Stacker prompting you for your password a second time after DOSDATA.SYS runs. This note will assist in the configuration of QEMM's DOSDATA.SYS in a Stacker password protected drive environment. SOLUTION - Restart your computer. - Configure DOSDATA.SYS to work with your Stacker Password Protected Drive. Restart your computer. When you restart your computer and enter your password, it may appear to hang at a mostly blank screen with a blinking cursor. Since the monitor is disabled at this point, you cannot see Stacker prompting you for your password a second time. Just enter your password and press to continue booting. Configure DOSDATA.SYS to work with your Stacker Password Protected Drive. Modify your CONFIG.SYS by adding an additional parameter to DOSDATA.SYS's configuration. Use any text editor such as DOS's EDIT or Stacker's ED.EXE. Add "/ALTVIDEO-" to the DOSDATA.SYS line in the CONFIG.SYS. 1. Locate the DOSDATA.SYS line in your CONFIG.SYS. It usually appears at or near the beginning of the file. It should resemble this: DEVICE=C:\QEMM\DOSDATA.SYS 2. Add "/ALTVIDEO-" to the end of the line. (Do not type the quotation marks). It should now appear like this: DEVICE=C:\QEMM\DOSDATA.SYS /ALTVIDEO- 3. Save the file and restart your computer. 4. Enter your password when prompted. ----------------------------------------------------------------- Copyright 1994 Stac Electronics
