----------------------------------------------------------------- STACKER NOTE STACKER NOTE UPGRADING TO A DOS VERSION THAT SUPPORTS PRELOADING (Applies to Stacker 4.0) STAC FAX 4306 (05-02-1994) ----------------------------------------------------------------- BACKGROUND The new generation of DOS products support preloading compression drivers such as Stacker. These new DOS versions include MS-DOS 6.0 and 6.2, Novell DOS 7, and PC-DOS 6.1 with file dates 9-30-93 or later. Preloading allows your Stacker driver to load before your CONFIG.SYS file. This provides increased safety. The new generation of DOS also supports Stacker's use of DPMS. This conserves precious memory resources. Full details on Preloading are contained in StacFax 4516. If you upgrade your DOS version to a new generation DOS, you may take advantage of preloading the Stacker device driver. The procedure below will tell you how. SOLUTION Setup the new DOS version. Setup Stacker as a preloading driver. Setup the new DOS version The new DOS' are fully aware of compression. Therefore you can install them by simply running their Setup program. Follow the instructions that came with your DOS version. Please note that having compression on your disk means that you will not be able to make an Uninstall disk. Setup Stacker as a preloading driver Once you have the new DOS version on the disk, you must configure Stacker to take advantage of its features. 1. First, establish the preloading Stacker device driver. At the DOS prompt type: STACKER . You will see a Stacker drive map. Locate the line that reports the C drive. It will look something like this: Drive C was drive D at boot time [ D:\STACVOL.DSK = 123.4MB ] Note the drive letter in brackets. In this case it is drive D. 2. Insert your Stacker disk # 1 into its drive, go to that drive and type: \TOOLS\REDBL drive: where drive: is the drive you noted above. Allow REDBL to establish the DBLSPACE.BIN file. 3. Go back to the Stacker directory on the hard disk. Type: CONFIG . Answer "yes" when the program offers to create or modify your STACKER.INI file. 4. Open your CONFIG.SYS file by typing ED /C . You will see two or more Stacker lines that will look something like this: DEVICE=C:\STACKER\STACKER.COM DEVICE=C:\STACKER\SSWAP.COM Remove these lines by typing REM at the beginning of each line. Add the new Stacker lines just above these lines. Type: DEVICE=C:\STACKER\DPMS.EXE DEVICEHIGH=C:\STACKER\STACHIGH.SYS This assumes that the Stacker files have been installed on drive C. 5. Press CTRL-Z to save the file. Restart your system for the changes to take effect. ----------------------------------------------------------------- Copyright 1994 Stac Electronics
