----------------------------------------------------------------- STACKER NOTE STACKER NOTE REMOVING STACKER FROM A DRIVE (Applies to Stacker 4.0) STAC FAX 4606 (05-10-1994) ----------------------------------------------------------------- BACKGROUND If you decide to remove Stacker from your system, use the UNCOMP command to uncompress your drive. This will uncompress your hard disk, and will remove Stacker's compression functionality. However, some vestiges of Stacker will remain on your disk, particularly in Windows. This document tells you how to remove all these references to Stacker. SOLUTION - Uncompress the disk - Remove references to Stacker in the Boot Files - Remove the Stacker directory and its contents, and Stacker hidden files - Remove all references to Stacker in Windows Uncompress the disk Type UNCOMP drive: at the DOS prompt then follow the instructions on the screen. Do this for each Stacker drive. When the last drive is uncompressed you will be asked if you wish to remove Stacker. Answer yes. Note that if you compressed any removable disks, you will not be asked if you wish to remove Stacker. If so, you must manually remove Stacker references. See the procedures below. Remove references to Stacker in the Boot Files After you uncompress the last hard drive, references to Stacker may be removed from the Boot Files (CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT). Examine these files to ensure all references to Stacker are gone or REMarked out. If not, you may remove them manually. From the Stacker directory, you may type ED /C to edit the CONFIG.SYS file, and ED /A to edit the AUTOEXEC.BAT. In the CONFIG.SYS, the Stacker lines will depend on the version of DOS you are using. For Preloading DOS versions (such as MS-DOS 6.0) they will be: DEVICE=C:\STACKER\DPMS.EXE DEVICEHIGH=C:\STACKER\STACHIGH.SYS For other DOS versions the lines will be: DEVICE=C:\STACKER\STACKER.COM DEVICE=C:\STACKER\SSWAP.COM The Stacker lines in the AUTOEXEC.BAT file are: REM The Check Line Below Provides Additional Safety For Stacker Drives REM Please Do Not Remove It C:\STACKER\CHECK /WP Also, examine the PATH statement in the AUTOEXEC.BAT file, and remove the reference to the Stacker Directory. Remove the Stacker directory and its contents, and Stacker hidden files 1. Go to the Stacker directory and delete all the files in it, then change to its parent directory and remove the Stacker directory. 2. Go to the root directory of the boot drive. Use the command DIR /AH or a third party utility to see if the Stacker hidden files are gone. They are STACKER.INI, STACKER2.BIN and DBLSPACE.BIN. If they are still there, use the ATTRIB command to remove the System, Hidden, and Read-only attributes from the files and then delete them. 3. Look for the file STACKER.LOG in the root directory of each drive that was previously compressed. Remove the Read-only attribute from the file with the DOS ATTRIB command or a third party utility and then delete it. Note that all of these tasks can be performed in Windows File Manager. Remove all references to Stacker in Windows When you start Windows you will probably get some error messages because some of the files being called have been deleted. 1. Go to Program Manager and remove the Stacker Group. First, delete all the icons within the Group, then the Group itself. 2. Open the Startup Group. If you have an icon there for Stacker Autosave, delete it. 3. Go to File Manager and delete the file STACTRN.SCR. 4. Open the file PROGMAN.INI in an editor such as Notepad. Examine the contents for any references to a Stacker Group. All references may have been removed when you deleted the Stacker Group. But if you had previous Stacker Groups, they may still be listed. You may delete these references. 5. Open the file WINFILE.INI in an editor such as Notepad. Remove the line "Stacker Extensions=...". If you see a reference to Stacker on the "dir1=..." line, do not remove it. This line is dynamic, and will change as you select new drives and directories. 6. Open the file CONTROL.INI in an editor such as Notepad. Locate the section [MMCPL]. Remove the line "Stacapplets=...". ----------------------------------------------------------------- Copyright 1994 Stac Electronics
