MOVENAME Version 1.1, 12 July 1994 Copyright (c) July 1994 by Jack Chandler MOVNAM11.EXE is a small utility program that will assist you in correcting the ambiguity of place name level assignments found in files you receive as GEDCOM and or download from the Ancestral File in GEDCOM format. We have all seen that the Ancestral File contributions are from many sources and not all use the same conventions to select the level for the City, County, State, Country when submitting data. The process of correcting these entries can be tremendous and at time almost as long as a standard keyboard input of the data. MOVNAM11 will allow you to do the following in a database created from an Ancestral File or other sources that exhibit those properties. 1. Change the name, spelling, or name format of any name in any place field for the entire database. 2. Move a name from one place field to another with a corresponding name change, spelling correction, or name format change during the move. 3. If a name is changed and the new name is not in the NAME2.DAT file, then MOVNAM11 will add it. 4. MOVNAM11 makes these changes on a global basis with no regard to RIN# and/or event type with the following exception: Options are provided to block any event fields from the selected moves. This will allow you to retain your place name field alignment for burials and christening in fields different than the birth and death by blocking these events on the menu. To move/change place names for the Christening and/or Burials then block the Birth and Death events. MOVNAM11 will not: 1. Change the case of a name that is already existing in the NAME2.DAT file. 2. Be selective in RIN# and/or event type name corrections. MOVNAM will make a global change for the entire database of the names selected. 3. Modify or change any Surname or Given name in those name fields nor the names in the Temple fields for ordinations. MOVNAM11 will ask for the location of your PAF database. MOVNAM11 does not have to be in that location but can be run from any drive/ directory. MOVNAM11 will then ask you to select the place name field you wish to move names from and the place name field you wish to move names to. The same field/level can entered in both places if you are only changing the name or the spelling. The two entries should be entered separated by a comma with no space in between. Examples: 2,3 will move the selected name from field 2 to field 3. 3,3 will not change the field but will put the selected new name in the same field. Next MOVNAM11 will ask you for the names you want to move or to change. As with the fields, these should be entered separated by a comma with no spaces. Examples: Ariz.,Arizona will change the abbreviation to the full state name. Clark Co.,Clark will change delete the term Co. from the entry. Remember that these are made on a GLOBAL basis so any entry of the name on the left of the comma found in the level on the left of the comma in the field entry will be changed and/or moved to the name and location on the right of the comma. These moves can be made from/to any level. That is, you can move 4,1 or 3,4 with equal results. The name is erased from the field it is moved from but is not deleted from the NAME2.DAT file. As always, when working with a utility of this type, BE SURE YOU HAVE a good BACKUP of your data files. I would recommend that this utility be used on any GEDCOM information prior to inputing the data into your main database. Input the GEDCOM to a separate subdirectory to correct it with MOVNAM11. Use PLACLST1 to identify the place names needing changed and/or moved. Clean up the corrected data with NAMCLN20, NOTCLN12, and RECLAM32 prior to merging with your existing data. Again, HAVE a GOOD BACKUP prior to using MOVNAM11. I will accept no responsibility for damaged data or failure of this program to operate properly. MOVNAM11 has not been extensively tested but has been used for several days on my own data. If you find any problems and/or have suggestions for enhancement please direct your comments to me at the address below or on GEnie to J.CHANDLER2 or on the Fido Net Genealogy Software Echo. No registration is required, but any contributions of $5.00 or less will be greatly appreciated. If you request a disk by US Mail, then please send a formated disk, addressed disk mailer, and return postage with your contribution. If you do not send a disk/mailer then send $5.00 plus $2.00 postage & handling and state your disk size. Have fun. Jack J. Chandler 812 Vermillion Dr. Henderson, NV 89015
