There are still a lot of details to be filled in, and some people may not agree with some of my answers. Please follow-up this post (to alt.tv.nypd-blue) with suggestions, and I will compile them into the next version of the FAQ. I would prefer suggestions to be posted rather than emailed so that we can get some discussion going again on alt.tv.nypd-blue, but feel free to email me. NYPD Blue FAQ - Last modified 23rd May 1994 =========================================== Compiled by Dave Chapman (dave@cheers.demon.co.uk). Please email me any corrections, improved answers or suggestions for additional questions (along with answers if possible), and I will add them to this document. Thanks to the numerous Internet users who were the source for most of the answers in this document, either directly via email or via their Usenet postings from where I plagiarised their postings. Other Sources of Information ------------------------------- 1.1. Is there an Episode Guide ? --------------------------------- Yes. I (Dave Chapman) have compiled an episode guide that contains full guest star listings (with character names). I post it regularly to the newsgroups [Q1.2]. Dennis Kytasarri has also written a guide. Both guides are available from the ftp site [Q1.5]. 1.2. What is the name of the NYPD Blue newsgroup ? --------------------------------------------------- It is called alt.tv.nypd-blue and was created on [??/??/??]. Note however, that many sites don't carry the full range of alt.* newsgroups, so you may be unlucky and not be able to receive it. If you can't access it, you could try politely asking the person in charge of news at your site to try and get it. There is also a small amount of NYPD Blue discussion on rec.arts.tv. 1.3. Is there a mailing list ? ------------------------------- No. To my knowledge there is no mailing list devoted to NYPD Blue. 1.4. Is there a drinking game ? -------------------------------- Yes. Alan Sepinwall (sepinwal@mail.sas.upenn.edu) with help from many others has devised the NYPD Drinking Game. It is available from the ftp site [Q1.5] or via email directly from Alan. The current version is 1.3. He also frequently posts it to alt.tv.nypd-blue. 1.5. Is there an ftp site ? ---------------------------- Yes. On the Tardis TV archive there is a directory devoted to NYPD Blue. It contains the latest versions of the episode guides, the drinking game and this FAQ. The NYPD Blue directory is called /pub/tv/us/drama/NYPDBlue. The Tardis TV archive contains lots of other guides and faqs for TV programmes (this is a plug - I maintain the archive). It is stored on tardis.ed.ac.uk and mirrored on ftp.ping.de. Note: currently tardis is dead due to a hardware fault, but it should be up again in early June. Please use the mirror site until then. 1.6. What articles have been written about NYPD Blue ? ------------------------------------------------------- TV Guide ran an interview with David Caruso in the Jan 8-14 1994 edition. His picture is on the front cover with the caption "Sex Symbol of the Season: NYPD Blue's Red-Hot David Caruso". TV Guide also had an interview with Dennis Franz in the Mar 5-11 1994 edition. He is also the cover-star, with the caption "The cop you HATE to LOVE: NYPD Blue's Dennis Franz--Sipowicz is a sweetheart, after all". The cover picture shows him... smiling! Alan Sepinwall's drinking game made the back cover of New York Newsday on 13th May 1994. There were 2 full columns which included extracts from the game. The headline was "TV Series Drives Viewers to Drink". [What else has there been ?] [Anyone fancy transcribing any of these ?] 1.7. Are there any scanned pictures available ? ------------------------------------------------ No. [Anyone want to scan any in ? Email me to get them added to the ftp site] 1.8. Are there any scripts available ? --------------------------------------- Not to my knowledge. [anyone?] 2. Cast Information. -------------------- 2.1. What are the correct spellings for the characters' names ? ---------------------------------------------------------------- These are all listed in the episode guide, but they are Det. John Kelly, Det. Andy Sipowicz, Off. Janice Licalsi, Det. James Martinez, Laura Michaels, Det. Greg Medavoy, Lt. Arthur Fancy and Donna Abandando. 2.2. What else has David Caruso been in ? ------------------------------------------ Films: [I will get this information from a film database before the next version of this faq - please don't email me about this until then] Television: Hill Street Blues - Guested in "Presidential Fever" and "A Hair of the Dog" [anyone with more details ?] Crime Story - 2 hour pilot film as Johnny O'Donnell, a family 18th Sep 86 friend of Mike Torello who is murdered by Ray Luca - thus starting the whole Torello/Luca feud which is the focal point of the series. This series lasted two seasons, and starred ex Chicago cop Dennis Farina as a Chicago cop pursuing Ray Luca through his rise from street-punk to high-ranking member of the mafia. [anything else ?] 2.3. What else has Dennis Franz been in ? ------------------------------------------ Films: [I will get this information from a film database before the next version of this faq - please don't email me about this until then] Televison: Hill Street Blues - 5 episodes in 3rd season as Det. Sal Benedetto and a regular from season 6 onwards as Lt. Norman Buntz. Beverly Hills Buntz - Short-lived spin-off as the Lt. Buntz character. [Anything else ?] 2.4. Is Sherry Springfield leaving the show ? ---------------------------------------------- Sherry Stringfield has left the show, and will star next season in NBC's new medical drama, "E.R." which will air at 10pm on Thursdays, replacing LA Law. She left the series because there was nothing left for her character to do. 2.5. Is Amy Brennemen leaving the show ? ----------------------------------------- No. But next season she will only be a recurring guest star, and not a series regular. [Why? Was this her choice?] 2.6. Who is Nicholas Turturro related to ? ------------------------------------------- Answer includes John Turturro. [can someone elaborate ?] 2.7. Who played XXXX in episode YYYY ? -------------------------------------- Please refer to the episode guide [Q1.1] for full cast listings for each episode. 3. Misc. -------- 3.1. Is there a soundtrack CD ? --------------------------------- Yes. The CD is entitled ["????"] and is published by ["????"]. The catalog number is ["?????"]. It contains the NYPD Blue theme, 5 other NYPD Blue tracks and 4 other Mike Post themes - Law & Order, Silk Stalkings, Renegade and Cop Files. [can someone help me with the details of this CD?] 3.2. What connections are there to Hill Street Blues ? ------------------------------------------------------- The strongest connection between NYPD Blue and HSB is producer Steven Bochco. Both Dennis Franz [Q2.2] and David Caruso [Q2.1] appeared in HSB. "Buck Naked". - [details please] [More information needed for this answer] 3.3. Where is NYPD Blue set ? ------------------------------ [There was a thread on this topic early in the life of alt.tv.nypd-blue - can someone please email me highlights ? Something to do with there being no real 13th Precinct ?] 3.4. I hate the style of camerawork. ------------------------------------- This isn't strictly a question, but it is frequently compained about. Many people have complained about the camerawork, and think it is just a gimmick, bowing to the latest fashions which makes them feel sick. I however (and I hope many others) like the camerawork and feel it's crucial to the atmosphere and style of NYPD Blue. It's an integral part of the show and I can't (and don't want to) imagine NYPD Blue without it. [anyone got anything else to add to this answer ?] 3.5. What was the Season 1 finale surprise ? --------------------------------------------- ABC hyped up the final episode saying there will be a surprise to end all surprises in the final episode, but apparently nothing surprising happened - was that the surprise ? [Can someone tell me (a UK Viewer) what the ABC hype was ?] [I haven't seen the final episode (to be shown on 18th June in UK) yet, so this section won't get filled in until then] 3.6. Why so many reruns ? -------------------------- Between Dec 21st 1994 (1st repeated episode) and the broadcast of the first season finale on 17th May, there were 11 new episodes, 10 repeats and 1 pre-emption. All the shows broadcast in April were reruns. This annoyed everyone on the alt.tv.nypd-blue newsgroup. No real reason has been given [anyone?], but I expect that ABC kept new episodes back to air them during ratings sweeps. There were a total of In the UK, we have seen all the episodes weekly since 15th Jan 94 and the season finale will air in the UK only 4 weeks after the US. 3.7. What do real NYPD cops think of the show ? ------------------------------------------------ According to a tabloid news show, many NYPD cops watch the show and appreciate Caruso's performance. [any more info ?] 3.8. What about all the controversy ? -------------------------------------- There are two controversial aspects to NYPD Blue. There is (mild) nudity in the (IMO) gratutitous sex scenes. There is frequent butt-bearing in the cop's locker room which some could describe as gratuitous, but (IMO) adds more to the realism of it, and shouldn't be an issue in an intelligent society. The second controversial content is the use of "street language" which IMO is completely justified and the general quality of dialogue writing is very high. Some US cable stations [details?] refused to show it, and advertisers have threatened [details?] to withdraw advertising from ABC [was this just advertising withing NYPD Blue, or for the whole network ?] [Has this died down now ?] ABC advise viewer discretion, and as such viewers know what to expect when they watch it. See alt.censorship. When the series was shown in the UK, it wasn't seen as controversial at all, many BBC shows have a similar level of nudity and expressive language. [anyone want to add to this answer ?] 3.9. What awards has the show won ? ------------------------------------ "Favorite Television Dramatic Series" - 20th Annual People's Choice Awards. [anything else ?] 3.10. Has it been renewed for the 94-95 season ? ------------------------------------------------ Yes. But according to an article in the Cincinnati Enquirer, the first season 2 episode won't air until after the world series - late October. [any confirmation on the airdate of the season 2 premiere ?] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Well, for those of you new to the group (or if you've lost your old copy),I figured I'd repost the latest version of the Drinking Game, which, as most of you know, just received a bit of publicity in NY Newsday, and was also recently quoted (along with a bunch of other Usenet Drinking games) in the latest issue of Entertainment Weekly (with Julia Roberts on the cover). I've discovered that the game is easier to play when watching reruns, because you have a better idea of what's coming next, and because you don't have to worry about missing something because you're downing a drink everytime somebody reaches out. -THE (UN)OFFICIAL USENET _NYPD BLUE_ DRINKING GAME, VERSION 1.3- Copyright 1994, Alan Sepinwall Created by Alan Sepinwall With help of Paul Sabourin Patrick Mallon Steve Wall Bryan O'Connor Frank A. A third option is to be Kelly, someone else, and Sipowicz, but only drink club soda for Sipowicz. Your call. -There will also be a list of social drinks at the end, where everyone *must* drink, regardless. These are things that might be done or said by any character. There are also a couple that are applicable for either Sipowicz or Kelly but no one else, and those will have a seperate header. -Any additions from the previous version will be marked with an asterix -The rest is pretty self-explanatory. Any questions or suggestions for additions, send me a line at sepinwal@mail.sas.upenn.edu ENJOY! NYPD BLUE DRINKING GAME, VERSION 1.3 DET.
