A CAREER FOR A NEW CENTURY: THE FANTASIST ÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄ Industrial Prose & Magic is the world's first commercial MUD development system. We at Continuum Software would like to help build a new industry based on MUDding that will allow people to make a real living inventing and providing imaginary worlds for other people to live in. There isn't yet a word for such a person. For now, we're going to use the term "fantasist". We won't kid you, it isn't easy to support yourself today as a fantasist, unless you already have a commercial BBS with lots of incoming lines. Most of the people reading this probably don't, at least yet. We're looking to the future, perhaps just a few years from now, when the joy and addiction of MUDding has spread beyond it's roots on college campuses, and moved towards the mainstream. (Much as Dungeons & Dragons did in the late 70s, moving from a campus addiction to a billion-dollar-a-year industry). But let's talk about what you CAN do in the present. There are people already making a respectable amount of money on the side right now, two ways: 1. By setting up a MUD with our credit accounting system (using the commercial edition), or your own BBS subscriptions (standard edition). With the commercial version, you can charge users by the minute; with our standard edition, you can boost your own sales of BBS subscriptions by offering a MUD on your system. 2. We are beginning to publish a line of pre-made MUDs for IP&M, for people that don't want to build one from scratch. We are currently accepting freelance submissions from members of The Fantasists Guild, the international association of IP&M developers and producers. Extremely generous royalty rates are paid to talented fantasists. See the SUBMIT.TXT file in our demo version for guidelines.
