For most users they work flawlessly, but for some, they create nightmares of data unobtainable in some stacked drive. Further, all control by the user must be relinquished to the vagaries of the software. Several Shareware products exist that work quite well, but most are limited to compressing or uncompressing directories. While other compression programs may be faster or have higher compression ratios, PKZIP was selected for use with ZIP&GO because of its widespread use and its proven reliability. The goals set in creating ZIP&GO were to make it a utility that would be user friendly, be user controlled, do more than zip and unzip directories, and be a reasonable and inexpensive alternative to commercial compression programs. ZIP&GO increases hard drive space by zipping directories, then storing the created zipfiles in one directory, ZG, saving even more space. -3- INTRODUCTION (continued) The DIR command can be used to display the available zipfiles in zipdir ZG. The same command line that zips the directory also runs the program in the zipfile, updates it, then re-stores it. This feature requires that the name of the word that runs the program be the same as the directory name. While .BAT and .COM file names can usually be changed, .EXE file names often can not be changed without affecting the running of the program. This problem is circumvented by the creation of a .TGT or .BAT file in the directory that can be recognized by ZIP&GO. Instead of the DOS order: .COM, .EXE, .BAT, ZIP&GO searches in order for: .TGT, .BAT, .COM, .EXE. Applications that are only occasionaly used, but which would take "forever" to run from a floppy disk, can be moved to a floppy disk, freeing up space, yet, be run directly on the hard drive from the floppy disk, when needed. Files too large to fit on a single floppy disk can be split, then moved to several floppy disks, and still be run directly on the hard drive from the floppy disk, when needed. As a result of its flexibility, ZIP&GO can be used as a BACKUP program. -4- REGISTRATION ZIP&GO is provided as ShareWare. You may use it for a time to see if it fits your needs. If you find it useful, you are encouraged to register. The registration fee is $15.00 and includes a 3.5" disk with the latest version and full technical support by mail or by phone. Future upgrades are provided at no cost. To print the registration form enter ZREG The registered version has these additional features: -All drives are supported. -Zipfiles can be stored in any specified directory. -Subdirectories of a directory can be zipped or unzipped. -Copy protected directories can be processed. -Choice of file size when splitting large zipfiles. Thanks for trying ZIP&GO, and please upload ZIP&GO50.ZIP to any BBS you use -LK -5- WHAT ZIP&GO DOES INCREASES hard drive space by zipping a directory and then storing it as a zipfile with the same name in directory C:\ZG or on a floppy disk. SPLITS a large zipfile into smaller "splitfiles" to fit on floppy disks. RUNS the program directly from the stored zipfile or from "splitfiles". MOVES or BACKS UP a directory and/or zipfile to a floppy disk. UPDATES a zipfile on a floppy disk. RESTORES a directory or COPIES a zipfile to the hard drive from a zipfile on floppy disk or RESTORES a directory from "splitfiles" on floppy disk(s). DISPLAYS the available free space, an approximation of the bytes needed, the directory and/or the location of the zipfile, if they exist, and the prompts C:\DIRNAME>...if the directory exists C:\ZG>........if the zipfile exists, but not the directory C:\>..........if neither exists -6- LIMITATIONS Initial zipping takes time. Once a directory has been zipped, running from and updating the zipfile takes only seconds. The root, DOS, or ZG directories cannot be processed. It would not be possible to run the computer or ZIP&GO if these directories were zipped. Directories installed to a specific location should not be processed. This form of copy protection (usually games) prevents the program from working and necessitates reinstallation if the directory has been moved from the installed location. Subdirectories of directories cannot be processed. Subdirectories are only processed as part of a directory, maintaining directory structure. Hidden, system, or read-only files are not processed. The attributes must be changed before running ZIP&GO to include these files. Zipfiles processed with prior versions of ZIP&GO should work. Should there be a problem, enter PKUNZIP -d DIRNAME \, then process with ZIP&GO v5.1. -7- HOW IT WORKS ZIP&GO searches the hard drive for the directory and the zipfile, then displays a menu of options. It is essential to have enough free space since a temporary file of equal size is created during processing. A 1MB zipfile requires 1MB of free space (twice that amount with SPLIT). If the directory name and the word that runs the program are not the same, a screen will be displayed with a special command line to be entered the first time the directory is zipped. A file (DIRNAME.BAT or DIRNAME.TGT) which can be recognized by ZIP&GO will be created in the directory. A directory can be zipped and split into 327680 byte files named DIRNAME.1, DIRNAME.2, etc. (the last file may be smaller) and moved to multiple floppy disks. If the zipfile is smaller than 327680 bytes, it will not be split. ZIP&GO does not alter files in any way. To restore a directory: PKUNZIP -d DIRNAME \ To restore a zipfile: COPY /b DIRNAME.1 + DIRNAME.2 + (etc.) DIRNAME.ZIP -8- COPYRIGHT ZIP&GO is copyrighted. This document and the other files comprise the "software". Authentic files carry the time stamp of 8-31-94 12:00 am. -10- GETTING STARTED A hard drive, DOS, PKZIP.EXE, and PKUNZIP.EXE are required. An ANSI.SYS driver or equivalent should be loaded. Most versions of DOS and WINDOWS will work with ZIP&GO. Commands can be typed in any case and from within any directory. DIRNAME is the name of the directory to be zipped, or the zipfile to run. To run ZIP&GO enter: ZG DIRNAME (no path or file extension). ZG for help. ZDOC displays the manual. ZDOC.TXT can be printed. Before installing, delete any existing ZIP&GO files from the hard drive. ZIP&GO files must be installed to C:\ZG, which must be in the path. Files can be installed from disk or from the hard drive, but NOT from C:\ZG. After installation has been completed, copies of PKZIP.EXE and PKUNZIP.EXE, which are not supplied, must be placed in ZG or somewhere in the path. From the drive and directory containing the ZIP&GO files, enter INSTALL C: -11- OPTIONS The options that can be selected from the menus are as follows: BACKUP............Creates a zipfile on a floppy disk from the hard drive. COPY..............Copies the zipfile on a floppy disk to directory C:\ZG. Use to replace a lost zipfile or one removed from the hard drive, which you wish to have available again. DRIVE A...........Displays a menu of options for drive A. DRIVE B...........Displays a menu of options for drive B. MOVE..............Moves the directory and/or zipfile to a zipfile on a floppy disk and deletes them from the hard drive. Use to have a seldom-used program readily available on disk. NOZIP.............Leaves the directory and files unzipped on the hard drive after running the program. Useful when you plan to use the directory again in a short time. -12- OPTIONS (continued) QUIT..............Exit ZIP&GO and return to DOS. RUN...............Runs the program on the hard drive. If there is no command word, the directory is restored, but the program is not run. The zipfile is automatically updated, when the program has finished running, then the directory and its files are deleted. SPLIT/BACKUP......As below, but the directory and files are not deleted. SPLIT/MOVE........Splits a zipped directory too large to fit on a single floppy disk into smaller "splitfiles, then moves them to multiple floppy disks. To restore a directory from "splitfiles", enter the command line, select drive A or B, then insert the disc containing DIRNAME.1. UNZIP.............Unzips a zipfile (restores directory). -13- OPTIONS (continued) VIEW..............Displays the contents of a zipfile. Useful to see the size of the directory when unzipped when the amount of space available on the hard drive is in question. UPDATE............Updates a zipfile on a floppy disk from the directory or zipfile on the hard drive. ZIP...............The directory is moved to a zipfile with the same name in directory ZG or to a floppy disk. The files will be displayed during processing, but subsequent unzipping and updating are performed "transparently". Use to zip a directory or rezip a directory with no command word. -14- ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS My thanks to Jim Gleason, special contributing member on Prodigy, who so kindly prepared the file to automatically load ZG in the path.
