          Buy a good phone line surge protector to protect your
          modem. Some computer surge protectors provide a special
          modular jack to protect your phone line as well as your
          electrical line.
          
          If you live in an area that has frequent lightning
          storms, it is best to unplug all your equipment when you
          are not using it. For example, I live in Florida. The
          summers in Florida have lightning storms often in the
          afternoons. In the summer, when I am not using the
          computer, I unplug everything. Even with good power surge
          protection, it is wise to unplug all your computer
          equipment in a lightning storm. Be sure to unplug both
          the electrical cord and the phone wire where it plugs
          into the wall.
