Introduction Thank you for taking the time to examine WordWise -- the most flexible and ex- pandable Daily Scripture program available. With nearly 30 Bible versions to choose from, support for most major operating systems, and a registration price under $20, we believe that WordWise is an outstanding program. A lot of work and thoughtful design has gone into making it an entertaining, flexible, and valuable part of your software collection. Once installed on your computer, it remains like a faithful friend, bringing you a message from God's Word as each day begins. WordWise is a perpetual daily calendar, and contains enough Scriptures to display a new one each day for an entire year without re- peating. Though the Scriptures will begin to repeat after one year, each verse will be displayed only once per year, and the calendar date will always be cor- rect. In addition to giving you daily Scriptures, WordWise can remind you of your daily Bible readings as you read through on a one-year plan. As a further benefit, WordWise was designed with expandability in mind. Addi- tional topics may be purchased and added at any time. Interested in increasing your Bible knowledge? Simply add the Bible Facts package and you'll have 366 questions to answer covering Bible personalities and events. How's your vocab- ulary? The WordWise vocabulary package will arm you with 366 outstanding words to "aggrandize your articulation". From quotable quotes, to foreign languages, to historical events, the WordWise library offers you many current and upcoming additions from which to choose. Following are some of the features of the registered version of WordWise. They are common to all platforms. * Bible verses displayed automatically each time you start your computer. Installation Automatic: (Recommended) Installation is quick and straightforward when using the WWSETUP program in- cluded with WordWise. Simply insert a disk with all of the WordWise files into a floppy drive and open the Windows File Manager. Select the floppy drive icon representing the drive which contains the WordWise disk, and double-click on the WWSETUP.EXE file to start the installation. At each step you are given op- tions, but there is always a default available by hitting the [ENTER] key. If you are uncertain about what to do, then choose the defaults. Once the WWSETUP program finishes, installation is complete. Proceed to the section entitled "Running WordWise the First Time." By Hand: Automatic installation as discussed above is recommended, but if you wish, you may install WordWise by hand. This is only recommended for those with a good working knowledge of how to get around in Windows, so these directions will not go into great detail concerning each step. If you are running Windows version 3.0, then the process is only slightly more involved. First, you should create a directory on your hard drive for WordWise (C:\WORDWISE, for instance) and use the EXPAND utility to copy into it all the files which come on the floppy disk. If the EXPAND utility was not included with your copy of Windows or DOS, then you should at least use the WordWise SETUP program to decompress the files for you. Then you will need to make sure that WordWise will run automatically each time Windows starts; this can be ac- complished in one of two ways: If you have Windows 3.1 or Norton Desktop for Windows, then your desktop will include a special group containing programs which are automatically run upon Windows startup. Under Windows 3.1 this group is entitled "Startup", and under Norton Desktop, it is entitled "Autostart". Highlight this group and choose the New item from the File menu. You can use the browse option to go to the WORDWISE directory you created on your hard drive, and select the WORDWISE.EXE file. In other words, you add it to the group just like you would add any file to a group. Once it is added, though, it will automatic- ally be launched each time Windows is started. If you are running Windows 3.0 you will need to modify your WIN.INI file. (You can also do it this way under Windows 3.1 if you wish, though the pre- ceding method is probably easier.) Use any text editor to open the WIN.INI file which is located in your WINDOWS directory. Near the beginning, you will see a line which begins with "run = ". Placing a filename after the equal sign causes it to be run automatically each time Windows begins, and there may be more than one filename on this line as long as they all are separated by spaces. Simply add WordWise to the end of this line and don't forget to include the full pathname. For example : "run = C:\WORDWISE\WORDWISE.EXE" That's all there is to it. Adding Files Later: It is highly recommended that you install all of the included Bible versions, and simply disable the ones you don't need. You can later delete the disabled files if you feel sure that you will never decide to enable them again. If you don't install them all, or delete some of them, and later want them back, you will need to run the WWSETUP program. Check the "prompt for each file" option, install just the packages you want, and then exit without completing installa- tion. New packages you purchase will not be compressed, so you can simply copy them into the WordWise directory on your hard disk. Running WordWise the First Time After WordWise is installed, it's a good idea to exit Windows and restart. That way you can verify that installation was successful and that WordWise will run automatically. The next step is to customize it. The first time it is run, WordWise will appear on the screen in the default lo- cation, but you may then resize it and locate it anywhere on the screen you de- sire. Each time the WordWise window is closed, its screen size and position are saved so that it will always appear the next time exactly where you left it. The size and location are up to you, but will depend upon the number of pack- ages you want to view each day and the font size you assign to each. (Refer to the "Changing Package Settings" section for information on enabling/disabling packages and assigning fonts.) Just remember to make your window a little taller than necessary because the length of each Scripture will vary from day to day. At this point, you should take the time to find your way around and become fam- iliar with the program. Enable all the packages you want to see, but just re- member: there's a limited amount of room on the screen. There is no limit, how- ever, to the number of packages it is possible to display, so if you want to see them all, simply adjust the font size accordingly. The remainder of this file contains more detailed information to which you may wish to refer during your evaluation. The program will return to the state it was in when you opened the Program Settings window. [Save] will close the window and write the changes you wanted to disk so Word- Wise will always start up with the same settings. These changes will re- main intact until the next time you save new settings. After choosing Save, a small message box will appear to confirm that the settings were written to disk. [Help] may be selected at any time for a quick reminder of how to change set- tings. A small help window will appear and, once closed, the Program Set- tings window will remain open until you choose OK, Cancel, or Save. Quote Method: WordWise can select the day's Scripture by one of three different methods, and gives you the ability to choose the one which best suits your needs. * Date: In this mode, WordWise checks your computer's clock for the date and displays the correct verse for the day. Unless your computer does not have a clock (which is unlikely) this is probably the best choice for you. * Incremental: By selecting Incremental Mode, a new verse will be displayed each time the program is run. Unlike Date Mode, Incremental Mode will give you a different verse each time WordWise is run throughout the day. The ad- vantage is that you can see more verses in a day's time; the disadvantage is that you will more quickly run through the 366 selections and begin see- ing repeats before the year is up. This should be the mode of choice, though, if you are unable to use Date Mode. * Random: This mode simply chooses one of the 366 possible verses at random each time the program is run. Since no record is kept of which have been displayed, repeats will be more frequent. Thus, it is the least desirable mode, but is available should you decide to use it. + Note: The first time it is run, WordWise checks for the presence of a system clock. If it finds one, then Date Mode is used, otherwise Incre- mental Mode is used.) Options: * Save to File: By checking this option, the current day's Scripture is saved to a text file as the program begins. The file may then be used with a word processor or speech processor. If your system has the necessary software and hardware to read a text file aloud (SoundBlaster card, Pro Audio Spec- trum, Covox, etc.) then you may direct it to read WORDWISE.TXT. Please re- fer to your audio card's manual for instructions on how to do this. * Justify Text: This option displays verses fully justified, with smooth left and right edges. Full justification can be more pleasing to the eye, but may leave large gaps between the words when your window is very narrow. Experiment with this option to decide which way you prefer. * Update Daily: Many people leave their computers on all the time and leave WordWise up in the corner of the screen. With the Update Daily option checked, WordWise will advance to the next day's verse at midnight each night. * Topmost: This feature, which only works with Windows versions 3.1 and high- er, causes WordWise to remain on top of all other windows on the screen. Normally, any window which is active covers all other windows which are currently running. By using this option, you could place WordWise in the corner of the screen, and it would remain visible even while you used your word processor, spreadsheet, or any other program in full screen mode. Since Windows version 3.0 does not support this feature, it can not be sel- ected while running under 3.0. * Screen Saver... Beginning with version 3.1, Windows comes with a built-in screen saver. The day's verse (from one selected version) may be loaded into the Windows screen saver by checking this option. First, you will need to enable the screen saver option by double-clicking the Control Panel icon in the Widows group entitled "Main", and select the "Desktop" icon from the Control Panel window. Under the Screen Saver section choose the name Marquee and set the delay to the time you desire. By choosing Setup, you can change many elements (like the font, color, or scroll speed) to your liking. Once the screen saver is enabled, open the WordWise Program Settings window and check the Screen Saver option. The window shown to the right will appear. Inside is a list box containing all the packages which are current- ly enabled. From these, you may select one and then click OK. Clicking Cancel will disregard any selections you may have made and close the window. At any time, you may click the Help button for brief instructions on selecting a package to be used with the screen saver. If the package you want loaded into your screen saver is not listed, then you must go back to the Package Settings window (Alt-S, P) and turn it on first. It will then be available for selection in the Screen Saver window. If you currently use After Dark or the Norton Desktop screen saver, then you can still enjoy the WordWise screen saver feature. First, follow the previous steps given for setting up the Windows screen saver. Then, go to the setup window for After Dark, or Norton Desktop. Both of these programs (as well as others on the market) give you the option of running the screen savers that come with Windows. Simply tell your screen saver to run Marquee. Norton Desktop will list it as "(MS) Marquee", and After Dark will show "Marquee (MS)". Beginning with the next time WordWise is run, your screen saver will dis- play the day's verse after a determined amount of inactivity. You can set the delay for five minutes, half an hour, or whatever amount best suits your work patterns. The Main Menu File: * Run: brings up a new day's verse, but only when running in Incremental or Random Mode. In Date Mode, the same verse will always be displayed for any given day of the year. (See the section titled "Changing Program Settings" for details about the three operation modes.) If you have the Save to File option enabled, then the new verse will be written to disk. * Exit: ends WordWise and closes the window. Its current position is saved to disk and will be restored the next time it is run. Settings: * Packages... opens the Package Settings box so that you may enable and dis- able packages, and assign different fonts to those which are enabled. See the section entitled "Changing Package Settings" for details. * Program... opens the Program Settings box so that you may make changes to program operation. See the section entitled "Changing Program Settings" for more details. * Start Date... aligns the Through the Bible package with the date you begin reading. * Day Forward: moves ahead to see the next day's verse. + * Day Backward: moves back to see the previous day's verse. + * Day Reset: returns to the original verse for the day. + (+ Note: Moving forward and backward is only possible in Date and In- cremental modes.) Options: * References... will bring up a window which allows you to view reference in- formation which comes with some packages. (A few Bible references are in- cluded with your purchase.) Once the Reference window appears, just select the desired reference from the list box and click the [View] button. If there are currently no reference files in the WordWise directory, the Ref- erences option will not be available. * Show Answers: reveals the answers to packages which contain questions. A good example would be trivia packages such as "Bible Facts". Each time Show Answers is selected, it will toggle the answers between being shown and being hidden; other packages will be unaffected. Choosing Day Forward or Day Backward will cause the answers to again be hidden. This option will not be available if there are no question/answer packages enabled. Help: * About Packages... gives title and copyright information about the WordWise packages in the current directory. * About WordWise... gives information about the current version of WordWise and the address for correspondence. ÈÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍͼ Instead of deleting the other files, WordWise simply renames them with an .off extension and then ignores them. This way, they are still available for future use, if you choose to re- enable them. The first and second list boxes show the enabled and disabled packages, re- spectively. To enable or disable a package, simply highlight it and click the [On/Off] button, or you may double-click the package name. This change will take effect once the Package Settings window is closed, and will remain in effect until the action is reversed. If you highlight an enabled package, the list boxes at the bottom of the window will display the font and size which will be used to display it. All packages are initially set to the System font with a size of 10, since this is always available in any Windows setup. (The only exception is the Greek package which requires the Symbol font.) Since the System font is not partic- ularly attractive, you will probably want to assign other fonts to your pack- ages. If you have purchased a collection of additional fonts and added them to your system, then you will be able to select these fonts in addition to the ones that come with Windows. To emphasize the character of each Bible transla- tion, you may consider assigning an appropriate font to each. For instance, you may decide to assign a gothic font to the King James, a script font to the New American Standard, or a modern font to The Living Bible. After choosing the style that looks good to you, click the [Assign Font] button to assign the new font and size to the package. If that package is ever disabled and later re- enabled, the font and size will be reassigned automatically. Following is a brief description of the purpose of the four buttons on the right-hand side of the window: [OK] will close the window and return you to the main window. If you have en- abled or disabled packages, or have assigned new fonts and sizes to en- abled packages, then the main WordWise window will be updated. [On/Off] will change the state of the currently selected package. If no pack- age is highlighted, then you will be reminded to choose one first. This action may also be accomplished by double-clicking the filename. [Assign Font] assigns the currently highlighted font and size to the high- lighted package. An enabled package, a font, and a size must have all been selected, or you will be given a message reminding you to highlight all three first. The font and size will be remembered even during per- iods when the package is disabled. [Help] may be selected at any time for a quick reminder of how to change package settings. A small help window will appear and, once closed, the Package Settings window will remain open until you choose OK. A Final Note While you are able to experiment freely with this program, please do not forget its purpose: giving you the opportunity to thoroughly test a commercial program before purchase. It is not "freeware", and may not be used past a reasonable amount of time in which you make a purchase decision. Please register WordWise so that we may continue producing high-quality, low-priced Christian software. And PLEASE help us by passing it on to others! God bless.
