End - Move cursor to bottom of poem. Summary: Sonnets ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 1. Fourteen lines of rhymed iambic pentameter. ("Iambic" meter places stress on the second of two syllables. "Pentameter" means a line with five beats, or, if iambic, ten syllables.) 2. Italian sonnets contain one octave followed by one sestet. 3. English sonnets contain three quatrains followed by one couplet.
