A villanelle is a nineteen-line poem divided into six stanzas, five having three lines and the last having four. 2. Refrain lines appear in the first stanza (as lines 1 and 3) and the last stanza (as lines 3 and 4). In the remaining stanzas, beginning with the second stanza, they take turns in serving as the last line of the stanza.
