******* THE I-MAIL MESSAGER ******* (c) Copyright - Challenge Business Systems Burnaby, B.C. Canada March, 1995 All Rights Reserved SYSOP INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS ******* THE I-MAIL MESSAGER ******* OVERVIEW Welcome to The I-Mail Messager, a "full-feature" Internet E-Mail program for Wildcat Bulletin Boards. You must be running Wildcat 4.01 or Wildcat 4.10 in order for this program to work. Installation is quick and simple if you understand a little about MS-DOS & some of it's commands (mkdir, copy & del) and how to use Wildcat's Makemenu & Wcdraw Utilities. As a surprise (we wanted to wait until now) we are pleased to inform you that this is UNBRANDED SOFTWARE. Thats right! NO WHERE DOES THIS PROGRAM SAY UNREGISTERED, DEMO, OUR NAME OR ANYTHING ELSE. No giant beg screens or flashing startups telling you how good we are or why you should pay for it. Just the program, thats all. Your users will think you wrote it and we're proud of this. Why? Because just like you, we've downloaded tons of software where people have spent more time writing the beg and startup screens than they did on the rest of their buggy program. But not this time. No begs or flashy startups, just a program that works. The unregistered version does however contain one limitation-a maximum of 5 e-mail addresses. All other features work properly without any limitations. PROGRAM FEATURES Please read the file IMGUIDE.TXT or the program' on-line help for the features and instructions on using the program. REGISTRATION & SUPPORT We're not going to make you scroll thru pages of begs, threats, demands and garbage warranties now, when all you want to do install the program to see if and how it works. Please read the file IMREGIS.TXT for this info. INSTALLATION Installation requires seven steps. These are: 1) Making a directory on your BBS'S hard disk to put the files in. 2) Copying all of the program files into this directory. 3) Choosing the correct version of our program for your BBS, either 4.01 or 4.10 and renaming that file's extension to .WCX 4) Coping the file IMAIL.CFG to your main wildcat program directory (i.e. c:\wildcat) 5) Editing IMAIL.CFG, using a text editor such DOS's Edit, to add your BBS Information. 6) Running Wildcat's MakeMenu utility to install the program on your BBS. 7) Editing your Wildcat BBS Internet E-Mail Menu(s), using WCDRAW or a similar editor, to add the program as a selection. - 1 - ******* THE I-MAIL MESSAGER ******* INSTALLATION (Cont.) 1) Making A Directory We recommend that you create a sub-directory for the program off of your main Wildcat directory. This places all your files in one sub-area for including as part of your regular Wildcat backup. (USER DATA FILES!) A) Change to your main wildcat using the DOS command CD. Example - CD C:\WILDCAT . B) Create a directory for the program using the DOS command MD Example - MD IMAIL . 2) Copying The Program Files. A) Change to the new directory you just created using the DOS CD command. Example - CD IMAIL . B) Copy all of the program files from the temporary directory where you "unzipped" our compressed file, to the IMAIL directory Example - COPY C:\TEMP\*.* C) Delete the files not required to run this program from your IMAIL directory, using the DOS DEL command. DEL DESC.SDI DEL FILE_ID.DIZ D) Change to the temporary directory where you "unzipped" our compressed file and delete all the files in it. (Saves your hard drive space) Example - CD \TEMP DEL *.* Y E) Change back to your IMAIL directory using the DOS CD command. Example - CD \WILDCAT\IMAIL 3) Choosing The Program Version You must now select which copy of our program you are going to use with your version of Wildcat. There are two files-IM401.BAT and IM410.BAT. One of these will have to be run to install the correct IMAIL.WCX and help screens. IM401.BAT is for Wildcat 4.01 and IM401.BAT is for Wildcat 4.10. If you are unsure of what version you have, check your one of your NODE's Status screens. The version number is displayed in the top left corner. At the DOS prompt (be in the IMAIL directory type SET401 Or SET410 - 2 - ******* THE I-MAIL MESSAGER ******* INSTALLATION (Cont.) 4) Copying The File IMAIL.CFG To Your Main Wildcat Program Directory. This file must be placed in your main Wildcat program directory or the I-Mail Messager will not work. It contains important information about your BBS that the program needs to function correctly. See the next step-Editing The IMAIL.CFG File for details. A) From your IMAIL directory copy our configuration file to your mail Wildcat program directory using the DOS COPY command. Example - COPY IMAIL.CFG C:\WILDCAT 5) Editing The IMAIL.CFG File. You MUST edit this file to give the I-Mail Messager some crucial details about your BBS or the program will not function at all. There are 6 lines of information required. These are: LINE 1 - The conference number for your internet e-mail LINE 2 - The complete path to the I-Mail Messager's program/data directory. A maximum of 29 characters is allowed. A \ MUST be placed at the end of the line. LINE 3 - The e-mail tagline for your BBS. All outgoing mail will have what you place here, added to the bottom of the message. This can be anything you want up to a maximum of 72 characters-the width of line in a Wildcat Message. (Advertising?). If you don't want a BBS tagline leave the line blank BUT DO NOT DELETE IT. LINE 4 - Charge Downloads To User. A Y or N only on this line. As The I-Mail Messager lets your users download their own messages from the BBS it is your choice whether these are free downloads or charged against their Upload/Download Ratio. Wildcat does not currently provide any way to check a file size from WCCODE programs so your users will be charged 1K for each download, if you set this to Y (Yes). LINE 5 - Reject possible bad internet e-mail addresses. A Y or N only on this line. If you set this to Y for yes then all addresses that do NOT contain a @ and . (with the . AFTER the @) will be rejected and the message entry cancelled. ALL internet addresses must have a minimum format of someone@somewhere.extension so this will stop users from writing local messages in your Internet Mail Conf. as the message will stopped with an invalid e-mail address the message header. LINE 6 - Your BBS Internet Domain Name. Put your BBS Internet Domain name on this line (i.e. challenge.com). Max. 40 characters. You may enter it in upper or lower case as the program will handle both. Doing this stops your users from "getting around" LINE 5 and using the I-Mail Messager for local mail by entering another local user's full internet address to send local mail. The I-Mail Messager will scan the domain name and reject any mail addressed TO your domain name. We've had a big problem with our users doing this. Why they want to is beyond us, but they were doing it alot. - 3 - ******* THE I-MAIL MESSAGER ******* INSTALLATION (Cont.) 6) Running Wildcat's MakeMenu To Install The Program On Your BBS. For all acknowledgements of trademarks, etc. please see the user guide. We're not going to plaster that crap all over everything we wrote for this program.
