+-----------------------+ |Parallel Hard Disk Xfer| +-----------------------+ March 22, 1995 Here is a set of tools that provides powerfull data exchange support between hard disks of two computers using the parallel port. Main features are: - MS/DOS or OS/2 client, MS/DOS server, - FDISK and FORMAT support, - SMARTDRV, DBLSPACE and DRVSPACE support, - HPFS support with OS/2, - Remote boot, - Hard disk copy at sector level, - Partition copy, - Hard disk backup, restore and compare (MS/DOS), - Automatic partitionning and formating (MS/DOS), - Directory import and export (MS/DOS), - Directory synchronization (MS/DOS). Files ----- PHDX.EXE - Multi-mode MS/DOS program that can be run in server or client mode. In client mode, it can be used as a driver or a command. Even if it used as a command, it is able to dynamically add MS/DOS drives. The Windows virtual driver is embedded. PHDXBOOT.EXE - Program to create a remote boot diskette. PHDX.DDP - Script file for OS/2 driver installation. PHDX.ADD - OS/2 client driver. The OS/2 client is able to access HPFS partitions even if the server runs under MS/DOS. HDCOPY.EXE - Hard disk and partition copy utility for MS/DOS. This utility works at the sector level and can be used on a single computer (without PHDX) or between two computers (with PHDX). PHDXFER.EXE - Disk management utility for MS/DOS. This utility requires PHDX. It can be used to import, export or synchronize directories between two computers or to perform backups using a hard disk on another computer. The backup operation can be used to copy a complete partition at file level, including system files. A partition is automatically created and formatted on the destination drive if required. If the source drive is the system drive, the destination drive will be bootable. Cable ----- The cable is a standard parallel to parallel transfert cable. You can get its specifications by executing the following command: PHDX /? Installation ------------ It is not necessary to install these tools on your computer except if you use them frequently (for example to exchange data between your desktop and your laptop). In that case, you just copy the PHDX.EXE and PHDXFER.EXE files in the DOS directory of your computer. It is recommended to create a PHDX server diskette using the following steps: - Format a diskette under MS/DOS using the /S option, - Copy the PHDX.EXE file to this diskette, - Create a AUTOEXEC.BAT file on this diskette containing the following line: PHDX /S This diskette will be used to boot the server computer even if MS/DOS is not installed on it. A specific driver must be installed when the client is running OS/2. The simplest way is to copy the PHDX.DDP and PHDX.ADD files on a diskette and to execute the standard OS/2 device driver installation procedure. This driver can remain installed even if the computer is not connected to a server. In that case, it is automatically unloaded. If you want to remote boot OS/2 from a server, you must install the PHDX.ADD driver on the server disk. In addition, the PHDX.ADD driver must be loaded before any other .ADD disk driver in the CONFIG.SYS file. Documentation ------------- You can get documentation for each utility by executing it with the /? option. The OS/2 driver will display configuration information if you add the /V option in the CONFIG.SYS file. +----------------------------+ |PHDX is not a free software!| +----------------------------+ If you like it and want to use it after a free 30 days period, please send 15 dollars to (USA): CIS Technology, Inc. 3265 Peppermint Street Newbury Park, CA 91320 Contact: Alan Guggenheim, Compuserve: 74157,155 - Internet: guggenh@ibm.net - Prodigy: FCWR64A or 100 french francs to (EUROPE): Aton SystŠmes 9, rue Olof Palme 94000 Creteil, FRANCE Contact: Dominique Ezvan, Compuserve: 100433,2571 If registered, you will receive the next version of PHDX when availlable.
