----------------------------------------------------------------- STACKER NOTE STACKER NOTE WINDOWS 95 SETUP ON A STACKER 4.0 DRIVE (Applies to Stacker 4.0 for Windows & DOS with Windows 95 Preview Program) STAC FAX 5001 (04-12-1995) ----------------------------------------------------------------- WINDOWS 95 & STACKER 4.0 Stacker 4.0 for Windows & DOS runs on Microsoft Windows versions 3.0 and 3.1 and most versions of DOS (see system requirements in documentation). Microsoft is developing a new operating system called Windows 95 and is offering a beta version of that operating system called Windows Preview Program to the general public. Because Windows Preview Program is a beta operating system and subject to change, Stac Electronics makes no warranties or claims as to the compatibility of Stacker 4.0 for Windows & DOS, or earlier versions of Stacker, with Windows Preview Program. The procedures in this document are provided for your information only. And, as always, when making any system changes, remember to make a backup of your data. BACKGROUND Some users have reported the successful setup of Windows 95 on a Stacker 4.0 for Windows & DOS drive. Compression results vary, and system speed may be affected. Before attempting this installation ensure that you have backed up the data on your drive. SOLUTION - Ensure there is sufficient space on the uncompressed drive. - Run the Windows 95 Setup. - Copy CHKDSK.EXE to the uncompressed drive. Ensure there is sufficient space on the uncompressed drive 1. Go to a DOS prompt and type STACKER . Locate the line that reports drive C. It will look something like this: Drive C was drive C at boot time [ D:\STACVOL.DSK = 123.4MB] Note the drive letter in brackets, in this case D. This is the uncompressed, physical drive. 2. Change to the drive you noted above. Run the DIR command to see how many bytes are free on the drive. 3. Windows 95 requires at least 900K free on the uncompressed drive. If there is sufficient space, go to the next section. If not, make more uncompressed space. See step 4. 4. From the DOS prompt, type STAC . This opens the Stacker Toolbox. 5. Choose "Change Stacker Drive Size". Follow the on-screen messages. When asked, choose "More Uncompressed Space Available". 6. When asked how much space to make uncompressed, add 1 megabyte (1000K) to the smallest size presented. Enter this number in the field. Accept the changes when asked. Run the Windows 95 Setup Follow the Setup instructions for Windows 95. After the setup is complete you may receive an error message from Stacker's AutoSave. Ignore the message. Remove AutoSave from the Startup menu to prevent the message from being displayed again. Note: During the setup process, Windows 95 will ask you if you wish to make a startup disk. It is recommended that you make the disk. But the disk is not Stacker-aware, i.e. it will not mount your Stacker drives if you start your system with it. Copy CHKDSK.EXE to the uncompressed drive Windows 95 deletes this repair file from the uncompressed drive. Restore it to the drive in case you have to make repairs to the uncompressed drive. Simply copy it to the DOS directory on the drive you determined in the first section. If the directory does not exist, create it. Use Windows' Explorer, File Manager, or open a DOS prompt. CHKDSK is in the WINDOWS\COMMAND subdirectory. Note that directories are called "folders" in Windows 95. ----------------------------------------------------------------- Copyright 1995 Stac Electronics
