Craig - All Rights Reserved ----------------------------------------------------------------- prohibited from charging any amount other than their normal distribution costs. SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS ------------------- This software was designed and written to run under Microsoft Windows Version 3.1 or later. It has not been tested on Windows Version 3.0 or OS/2, and will probably NOT run on either of these platforms. If your system is running Windows 3.1 successfully, this software should run without any difficulty. The software, help file, and data file require less than 500kb of disk space, so it is not a "Disk Hog". INSTALLATION ------------ ========================== N O T I C E ========================== ALWAYS MAKE A BACKUP OF YOUR SYSTEM (OR AT LEAST THE AFFECTED FILES) BEFORE INSTALLING THIS OR ANY OTHER SOFTWARE! It's a lot easier to do that now than wishing you had later! ================================================================= The files on the distribution diskette, unlike many Windows applications are not "Compressed" files. Since they all fit on a single diskette, I saw no reason to compress them. If you need to recover a single file, or if for some reason you have problems with the installation process, you can just "Copy" files from the distribution diskette. This software is very easy to install. From Windows, you can install the software in one of two ways. From PROGRAM MANAGER, select the "File" option of the main menu, and then "Run". For the command line, enter A:\INSTALL (or if your floppy drive is drive "B", enter B:\INSTALL). Alternatively, you can use the Windows FILE MANAGER. From File Manager, click the "A" or "B" disk icon (depending on which floppy drive you use), and then double-click on the INSTALL.EXE program. Either method will launch the installation, and you will be prompted to enter a directory for the software. By default, this will be "C:\HAM", however you can use whatever directory you want to use. To change the directory, simply enter the full path to the directory you want to use. Click "OK" and the installation will begin. The installation will install 4 files into the destination directory and 1 in the Windows/System directory. They are: SOL201W.EXE .... The main executable program SOL201W.HLP .... The program's HELP file GRAPH.DAT ...... A Solar Data file README.TXT ..... This file CTL3DV2.DLL .... In the Windows/System Directory ----------------------------------------------------------------- SOL Version 2.01 GENERAL INSTALLATION INFORMATION Copyright c 1995, Scott A. Craig - All Rights Reserved ----------------------------------------------------------------- I hate software that puts stuff in my Windows/System directory, but CTL3DV2.DLL is legitimate. This file is a Microsoft file that enables 3-D appearing controls and dialogs. Because of Microsoft's attempt to "Standardize" Windows software development, this particular file MUST be in the Windows System directory or it will not work. It cannot reside in any other directory. If you choose to delete this file, my software will still run correctly, but the appearance of the screen will not be as good. After the files have been installed, a new program group will be created in Windows. This program group will have three program items. It will have the program itself, SOL20W, an icon to execute Notepad to view this text file, and an icon to access the Help file. If you already have a program group set up for Ham related programs, you may just want to move these items over to it. To do this, open the group that you want to move SOL20W into, and open the new group that contains SOL20W. Put your mouse's cursor on the SOL20W icon, push the left mouse button, and HOLD IT DOWN, and just drag the SOL20W icon over to the other group. If you want to move the README and HELP icons to the other group, repeat the process. Once this is done, you can delete the SOL20W group since it is now an empty group. To do this, click the minimize button on the SOL20W group box (the little down arrow head in the upper right corner of the group box) to minimize it. It should be visible at the bottom of your desktop, with the group name highlighted. Press the [DEL] key on your keyboard, and Windows will ask you if you are sure you want to delete the group. MAKE SURE IT READS THE SOL20W GROUP OR YOU ARE GOING TO DELETE SOMETHING ELSE! Click OK and the SOL20W group will be deleted, or CANCEL to cancel the deletion. SUMMARY ------- That's all there is to it. To run the software, just double-click the SOL210W icon to start the program. I would highly recommend that you look through the Help file (take the "Guided Tour"). This program has quite a few options that you can use, and there have been many changes from the previous versions. If you are new to the software, the Help file will also show you all of its features. Some of the colors I chose as the defaults may not look correct on your system. I tried to pick "Generic" colors that would work on most systems, but there are always exceptions. All the colors used in the program can be changed in the OPTIONS selection of the main menu. ----------------------------------------------------------------- SOL Version 2.01 GENERAL INSTALLATION INFORMATION Copyright c 1995, Scott A. If you have comments, god or bad, please feel free to let me know. I'm always interested in how people feel about my software. After all, I can't fix it if I don't know it's broke!
