MEM 1.0 Introduction 2.0 Disclaimer 3.0 Running Mr. Mem 4.0 Autoload Option 5.0 Block Settings 6.0 What if the Problem Still Exists 1.0 Introduction Mr. Mem will allow more Windows applications to run concurrently. A very common Windows error message is "Insufficent memory to run application". This can mean a number of things, but the most common situation is that memory in the 1 megabyte address space has become full. DOS and DOS tsr's use this address space, as well as various Windows programs and device drivers. In order for Windows to start up a new program some of this 1 megabyte address space is required, if space is not available the error message will occur. Mr. Mem prevents some programs from putting data in this area if it is not needed. This in turn conserves this 1 megabyte address area. 2.0 Disclaimer Kamyan Software makes no representations or warranties with respect to this software or documentation, and specifically disclaims any express or implied warranties of merchantablilty or fitness for any purpose. The first time run, default values will be shown in the "Number of Blocks" and "Block Size". These defaults should work for most cases. To get the best results from Mr. Mem run it before other programs. The best way to do this is to use the Autoload option explained below. 4.0 Autoload Option When the Autoload check box is selected, Mr. Mem will automatically be loaded when Windows starts. This is the best way to start Mr. Mem because it will be started before other programs that may be in your startup group. When selected, the program name "mrmem.exe" is placed in the "LOAD=" line of the win.ini file. 5.0 Block Settings The default settings for "Number of Blocks" and "Block Size" should be fine for most cases. The "Number of Blocks" setting determines the maximum number of memory blocks that Mr. Mem will try to reserve in the 1 megabyte address area. The "Block Size" setting determines the size of the memory blocks that Mr. Mem will try to reserve. The value "512" is used as the default because that is the size needed to start new programs in Windows. Any changes made will be remembered and used the next time Mr. Mem starts up. If you wish to make use of the new settings right away press the "Refresh" button. 6.0 What if the Problem Still Exists Even when running Mr. Mem, at some point you will run out of memory. And still it is very likely it will be in the 1 megabyte address space. What follows are some of the things you can do if the problem still occurs. - Remove any DOS TSR's that are not needed. - Change your video driver. - Remove any Windows extensions that are not needed ( such as Pen ). - As a last resort, reinstall Windows. The idea here is that over time a number of Windows device drivers were installed that are not longer needed.
