The Never Ending Story - version 1.0 Designed and Programmed by Shane Guay Copyright 1995, KattleSoft Productions [ OVERVIEW ] The Never Ending Story is a door in which users can read and enter pages into a story. The fun is that the story is constantly changing depending on what other users write and can create very interesting plot lines. Users do not always have to enter a page into any of the stories but can just decide to read any new chapters written. The door is designed to run on all major BBS packages including : Remote Access, QuickBBS, PC-Board, Maximus, Opus, Wildcat!, WWIV, Spitfire, SuperBBS, Telegard, RBBS-PC, TriTel, GAP, ect... The Never Ending Story requires that ANSI mode be turned on. If it is not present when a user logs on s/he will be prompted if they would like to turn it on. If they select no then s/he will be brought back to the BBS. [ DOOR SETUP ] - Has FOSSIL-based as well a serial I/O capabilities. - Supports a baud rate of up to 115,200. - Is DesqView aware. Before running The Never Ending Story you must first run the SETUP utility provided. Here you will be able to select your starting pages for each story. In the unregistered version you can only have up to 2 stories going on at once. The registered version offers up to 8 ongoing stories as well as the ability to create your own starting story pages. To use the SETUP you first select a slot to place the new story page in. Next you will be prompted to select the new story page from the 10 default ones provided (NOTE: you can have the same story page in each slot..allowing for different versions of the story to involve.) **NOTE** When you select a slot in which a story already exists, the story will be deleted and overwritten with the new one. To only argument passed is where the path of where the bbs's drop file is located. example batch file while running under Remote Access BBS: cd\story <- Changes to the Never Ending Story directory. story c:\ra <- Runs the actual door telling it to find the drop file in the c:\ra director. cd\ra <- After exiting the door returns to the BBS directory. ra -r <- Starts Remote Access [ FILES ] STORY.EXE <-- The actual door. SETUP.EXE <-- The door setup utility. (MUST BE RUN FIRST!) NEVEREND.HLP <-- The help documention. (Used within the door) When the setup utility is run it will create the actual story files which will be accordingly : STORY#.NES <-- the # stands for the slot number that the story is in. [ LOCAL MODE ] The door can also be run in local mode by placing the uppercase word LOCAL as the first argument. (example: story LOCAL). This will give you the same options as if you were loading the door from the bbs except that you will also be able to view who the author is for each page in a story (In the registered version you will also be given the option to DELETE any page within any story). [ COMMON PROBLEMS ] A special flag is created whenever a user goes to write a new page. This is to prevent any other user from overwriting the new page. The flag files are STORY#.FLG .. the # stands for the story slot that is being written. If a user is writing a new page to a story in slot 2 other users can still write a new page on any other slot at the same time or wait until the current user is done creating the page. If for some reason your computer locks up when a user is entering a new page the flag file may not be deleted, telling users that somebody is writing a new page to the story when in fact nobody is. Just delete the flag file for the selected slot. [ DISCLAIMER ] I make no warranty of any kind regarding the reliability or fitness of this software for any purpose whatsover.
